Amy Heckerling’s 1990's classic Clueless is the latest title getting the remake treatment at Paramount. The film industry is currently going through a boom of remakes and reboots, and while this has been more prominent in the horror genre, there are other genres that studios are also opting to bring back.
There are a lot of films from the '90s that have gained cult status through the years, and one of them is Clueless, a coming-of-age romantic-comedy written and directed by Heckerling and loosely based on Jane Austen’s novel Emma. Set in modern-day Beverly Hills, Clueless starred Alicia Silverstone as Cher Horowitz, a “Valley Girl type” on the top of the social pyramid, who along with her best friend Dione (Stacey Dash) gives new girl Tai (Brittany Murphy) a full make-over, unaware that this will bring some changes not only to her social life but also her personal life. Now, Paramount is looking to bring Cher and company to the present day through a remake.

According to Deadline, a Clueless remake is in the works, with producer Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip) on board and Marquita Robinson (Glow) in charge of the script. Back in June, it was announced that a musical titled Clueless: The Musical will make its Off-Broadway debut in November, with Dove Cameron starring as Cher. There are no more details on the remake yet and, as Deadline points out, it’s unclear if it will introduce new characters for the new generations or if the ones we met on the original film would reprise their roles.
Clueless was released in 1995 and was very well received by audiences and critics alike, who mostly praised its humor, the fresh take on Austen’s novel, and its catchy phrases. The film has become part of popular culture thanks to its characters fashion trends and lingo (such as Cher’s famous “as if!”). The following year, a spinoff television series – also titled Clueless – debuted on ABC, with several cast members reprising their roles (with the notable exception of Silverstone, who was replaced by Rachel Blanchard) and many other characters being cut.
Although Clueless was released over 20 years ago, the characters and story still connect with new audiences – but it’s understandable that the studio wants to modernize it a bit. Hopefully, it will manage to keep the spark and freshness of the original with a modern twist – and we’ll see if it will also use Austen’s work as a base or will only focus on Heckerling’s work.
