Daredevil Season 3 Surprisingly Includes Mass Effect 3's Theme

Netflix's Daredevil season 3 surprisingly uses music from BioWare's Mass Effect 3 video game soundtrack. It's been over a year since Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, appeared on the small screen. He was last seen in The Defenders crossover event last summer, alongside superheroes Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist, along with several other supporting characters. But Daredevil's in-universe future looked bleak following the conclusion of The Defenders season 1.

While it's only been a few weeks by the time audiences catch up with Matt Murdock's new life at the start of Daredevil season 3, it's been quite some time since The Defenders aired. And it's been even longer since audiences saw what happened in Daredevil season 2. So, it's understandable that audiences would want to quickly catch up to remind themselves of everything that went down with The Punisher, The Hand, Karen Page, Elektra, and more. So, Netflix put together a short recap video that briefly recounts everything leading up to Matthew's story in season 3, and it plays ahead of the new season's first episode - but it's Netflix's music choice that's catching people's attention.

BioWare fans may notice that Mass Effect 3's "Leaving Earth" theme - composed by Sasha Dikicyan, Sam Hulick, Christopher Lennertz, Cris Velasco, and Clint Mansell - plays throughout Daredevil's recap video. It was particularly unexpected (but a great choice), especially since it's a track from a video game, but then this wouldn't be the first time that something like this has happened.

Furthermore, during an FBI meeting in episode 2, a track plays that heavily resembles music from Marvel's Spider-Man game for the PlayStation 4, particularly segments of the track, "Inside the Numbers". Considering the fact that composer John Paesano created the music for all three seasons of Daredevil as well as Insomniac's Spider-Man game, it makes sense that some musical notes will transfer over between the two properties. It's the same reason that First Man's soundtrack contains similar cues to La La Land since the same composer (and director, for that matter) did both.

But, perhaps the most intriguing thing here is that Netflix opted to use Mass Effect 3's main song as background music for their Daredevil recap video. While it may be surprising to most people, it's actually quite common for studios to reuse tracks from other properties, including movies and video games. In fact, one of the most used tracks ever in movie trailers is still Hans Zimmer's "Time" from the Inception soundtrack.
