Marvel Studios wants to hire a female director for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 according to a new rumor. Ever since Disney decided to fire James Gunn as director on the third Guardians movie, there's been constant chatter of what will happen next. Marvel is said to still want to use the script Gunn wrote, but changes could be made when a new director is found. From the get go, the most popular suggestion to take over the franchise has been Taika Waititi after his stellar work on Thor: Ragnarok.
It's been a few months now since Gunn was let go but Guardians 3 is no closer to having a director officially. There has yet to be a shortlist of names and it remains unclear where Disney and Marvel plan to place the sequel after putting production on hold indefinitely. This happened as the director search is still in the early stages.

According to a rumor shared by DanielRPK, he's heard that Marvel Studios wants a female director for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He stresses that this is just a rumor - but one that comes from a reliable source of his - so this should be treated as such for the time being.
Update: Super Bro Movies reports that the director shortlist for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 include Dee Rees (Mudbound), Michelle MacLaren (Game of Thrones) and S.J. Clarkson (Star Trek 4).
Even though this is just a rumor, it one that is easy to believe. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and producer Victoria Alonso have both spoke several times about the desire to add more female filmmakers to their universe. There is a difference between considering a female director, wanting a female director, and actually hiring one though. Marvel should be considering female directors for any of their projects. However, the job should go to whoever is the best fit for the property. In the case of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, that very well could be a woman.
Marvel Studios has hired three female directors to this point, but it isn't known who they could want. One contender could be Michelle MacLaren (who previously was attached to Wonder Woman), as she's set to direct Chris Pratt's new hopeful franchise Cowboy Ninja Viking. She has some working relationship with him to this point and could receive a push from the Guardians star to take the reigns here, especially if Cowboy Ninja Viking continues to remain stuck in development.
But if Chloe Zhao's hiring for The Eternals tells us anything, it's that one of the other names on the Black Widow shortlist could be reconsidered for Guardians 3. The likes of Amma Asante (Belle), Maggie Betts (Novitiate), Deniz Gamze Erguven (Kings), and Angela Robinson (Professor Marston and the Wonder Women) were in contention. Marvel also looked at Watchmen pilot director Nicole Kassell and Birds of Passage directors Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra for The Eternals, so they too could be brought back for future meetings. Then again, Marvel could meet with a whole new line of directors and hire one of them for the next Guardians film. With production reportedly delayed to 2021, it could be a while before Marvel names Gunn's replacement, but no one should be surprised if it is ultimately a female director who tackles Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
