Over the past twenty years, Harry Potter has changed the game in a lot of ways. Even though some aspects of the story may seem a bit dated today, it still means a lot to many people. More importantly, it still has a vibrant and bustling fan community, who are still churning out stories, discourse, and fan art to this day. Even though the Wizarding World is ever expanding, for better or for worse, fans still have a lot of room to flex their creative muscles.
Yes, there are so many pairings in the Wizarding World universe. One of the biggest stories in the books is the romance between Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley. After everything these two had gone through over the course of seven books plus a stage play, they have earned their happy ending. Maybe we have to wonder how happy that ending is given the angst and drama of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, but overall they appear to be a healthy and loving couple.
Even so, there is a 19-year gap between the end of Deathly Hallows and the start of The Cursed Child. What happened in that gap? How did they flourish in those early post-War years? What did they do? Well, we have those answers ready to go for you. It’s time to see just what happened to this couple once that last book closed and before the curtain rose.
Here are 20 Things Harry And Ginny Did Between The Deathly Hallows And The Cursed Child.
20 They Got Back Together
Harry and Ginny broke up at the end of The Half-Blood Prince after only a couple months of dating. It was a choice made in order to protect Ginny from targeting from the Death Eaters following Dumbledore’s defeat. Who knows how much good it did her, seeing as she got a target on her back all the same. Even so, the pair were actually broken up during the Battle of Hogwarts. This means that they didn’t get back together until after the war ended.
It’s unknown when or how they got together, but it was likely between 1998 and 2000.
They could barely stand being parted during The Deathly Hallows so that could indicate a relatively quick reunion.
19 They Got Married
This one is a bit obvious, but still true. In between the end of The Deathly Hallows and the start of The Cursed Child, Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley did end up tying the knot. We’re pretty sure there wasn’t a dry eye in the house during that ceremony. We do know that it was a relatively short time after the War concluded that the two did marry.
While they were having children in 2005, we’re not going to presume that they were married by then, though it's likely as we can’t imagine Molly Weasley being happy about this otherwise.
18 They Had Two Sons and A Daughter
Yes, this happy couple had three children during the course of their marriage: James Sirius, Albus Severus, and Lily Luna. Given James Sirius’ age at the start of The Cursed Child, we know he was born in 2004 or 2005. This was probably after Ginny’s first half of her career, which we’ll touch on later. In addition to this, they already had several years of marriage and coupledom together under their belt.
It’s fairly mature of them to wait until they were secure in their work before starting a family.
It’s safe to say that their children definitely had their own adventures, Albus especially.
17 Ginny graduated from Hogwarts, but Harry didn't
Following the Battle of Hogwarts, newly elected Minister of Magic Kingsley Shacklebolt offered former members of Dumbledore’s Army chances to become Aurors without having taken their NEWTs. Harry and Ron decided not to go back to Hogwarts and help rebuild the Wizarding World as Aurors. The duo was able to do a lot of good in the time that they worked their together.
Ginny, however, did complete her education along with Hermione Granger, who also returned to get her Hogwarts diploma. It’s unknown if she had to repeat her sixth year or was allowed to advance to her seventh, despite the turmoil that went on during the year that Voldemort ruled the Wizarding World.
16 Harry Made Up with Dudley
For a relatively minor recurring character, it’s safe to say that Dudley Dursley definitely went through the most development.
While Petunia and Vernon would never really get over their hatred of Harry, Dudley definitely wanted to make amends with his cousin.
It’s still tragic that the handshake scene, which signals the pair of them on the road to making amends, was cut out of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part One. Even so, in between Deathly Hallows and The Cursed Child, Harry and Dudley did repair their relationship. Yes, it will still fraught with the abusive way that Harry grew up at the Dursley’s, but at least Dudley corrected his behavior. Hopefully, if a Dursley ever goes to Hogwarts, they’ll have a Potter to help them out.
15 They Help Raise Lupin and Tonks' son
If anyone could understand what Teddy Lupin (drawn here by hueco-mundo) went through growing up, then it would be his godfather, Harry Potter. While Teddy was primarily raised by his grandmother, Andromeda Tonks, Harry and Ginny both had an active part in his life. Unlike Neville, who was also raised by his own grandmother, Teddy always had a large extended family to spend time with.
Helping Andromeda in raising the young Metamorphagus may have prepared Harry and Ginny for raising their own children. More importantly, it gave Harry some closure in regard to his godfather, Sirius. Either way, it’s safe to assume that Teddy had an interesting childhood that was, most importantly, full of love.
14 Ginny played Quidditch professionally
Following graduation from Hogwarts, Ginny was recruited by the all-female Quidditch team, the Holyhead Harpies. She would go on to play for the team for several years. It’s uncertain when she retired, though we’re assuming it may have been sometime before she was pregnant with James Sirius. She played Chaser during that time, which was what she played during her Hogwarts tenure.
The Holyhead Harpies are the only all-female team in the British-Irish Quidditch League.
During Ginny’s time there, she was probably led by Slug Club alumnae Gwenog Jones. Jones was definitely known for her temper on and off the field. Given Ginny’s well-known Bat Bogey Hex, the two got along fairly well.
13 Harry Appeared on a Chocolate Frog Card
In the years after the Second Wizard War, there were new Chocolate Frog Cards added for its heroes. Naturally, Harry appeared on one, but so did Ron and Hermione, which is something that Ron reportedly considers “his finest hour.”
Being a famous Quidditch player in her own right, hopefully Ginny would have eventually appeared on her own Chocolate Frog card. If not for that, then maybe for her role in the Battle of Hogwarts, when she kept the students safe while the Golden Trio went on their Horcrux Hunt. Unfortunately, Ginny’s Chocolate Frog Card status remains unknown at this time.
12 Harry Made Peace With Malfoy
Dudley wasn’t the only childhood enemy that Harry had made peace with after the Second Wizarding War. Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter, longtime school boy enemies, also went through their own reconciliation process following the War. Seeing his family suffer at the hands of Lord Voldemort during the War led to a change in pure-blood views for Draco. It also led to he and Harry making amends.
Much like the awkward relationship between Harry and Dudley, there was still some discomfort between them.
Further fences had to be mended, of course, when their sons would go on to be best friends on the train ride to Hogwarts. We all know how that story ends.
11 Ginny wrote for the Daily Prophet
Following her retirement from professional Quidditch, Ginny would go on to work at The Daily Prophet. Her role there was in the Sports Section as a Quidditch correspondent. That makes so much sense, as many professional athletes go on to do something similar following their own retirements. She would have probably worked her way up through the ranks, eventually landing as a Senior Quidditch Correspondent.
Presumably, she would also travel for work, at least for the World Cups when they were held. In 2014, Ginny (under Ginny Potter) was covering the Quidditch World Cup, joined by her family for the Finals. Taking place in the Patagonian Desert, the finals ended up being between Brazil and Bulgaria.
10 Harry was the Youngest ever Head Auror
Following the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry and Ron made the decision not to go back for the final year at school. Instead, they become Aurors with the Ministry, which was Harry’s career aspiration in the first place. They worked as Aurors together for two years before Ron left in order to help his brother George with Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes. Following this, Harry stayed on with the division while Hermione worked with Department of Magical Law Enforcement.
When he was 26 or 27, Harry ascended to the office of Head Auror.
This made him the youngest ever wizard to hold such a position. He ended staying there for several years as well.
9 Ginny Hexed Rita Skeeter
This may be the coolest thing either of them have did after Hogwarts-- or at least, the most emotionally satisfying for longtime Potterheads. During the coverage of the 2014 Quidditch World Cup, Ginny Weasley (as Quidditch Correspondent) covered the event with The Daily Prophet’s Rita Skeeter.
Skeeter apparently still had that same less-than-pleasant journalistic style that she always had. Eventually, she would go on to point out that Harry Potter was still “publicity hungry.” At that point, Ginny apparently hexed her right in the solar plexus. Thus multiple generations of Potter fans experienced a cathartic experience unlike anything else in the world. Rita had apparently “taken ill,” according to Ginny.
8 They took a family trip in 2014
Ginny may have had her shining moment during the 2014 Quidditch World Cup, but Harry was also there, along with their three children. During the match, Rita Skeeter, before taking ill, kept her eyes on the VIP box where the Potter family and friends were seated.
During that time, Albus, eight years old, nearly toppled out of the VIP box, with Ron saving him the last minute.
Harry merely passed a treat from Luna to his son, apparently unconcerned. During the match, it was revealed that Harry was sporting a cut, courtesy of his work with the Auror Department. He also introduced to his children to his friend Viktor Krum at some point as well.
7 Harry Hung Snape’s Portrait In the Hogwarts Office
It’s traditional that when a Headmaster perishes that their portrait joins the previous Headmasters in the office of the Hogwarts Headmaster. Following his demise, however, Snape’s portrait was denied a chance to be placed in the Headmaster’s office. Many people felt that having a portrait of the Death Eater who ended Albus Dumbledore did not send a good message. Some debated the validity of his appointment to the post.
Harry, however, campaigned to have Snape’s Headmaster’s portrait hung in the office due to his service as a double-agent for the Order of the Phoenix. Even though the pair had great animosity toward each other, this proved that Harry was willing to forgive the man and make sure he was remembered as a hero.
6 Harry rode flying Sirius’ Motorbike
The motorbike that young Sirius Black gave Hagrid to take Harry to Dumbledore and the Dursley’s figured prominently in the opening pages of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It's also an important part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, where Harry rides it to escape Voldemort's clutches during the Battle of the Seven Potters.
After the war, Hagrid gave Harry Sirius’ motorbike, as his godfather would have wanted him to have it.
Presumably he rode at some point in time as he and Ron both have their licenses. There’s definitely something poetic about the full-circle arc of the motorbike, isn’t there?
5 Harry Lost His Parseltongue ability
Throughout the seven books of the Harry Potter franchise, it was pretty well established that Harry could talk to snakes, even if he didn’t have the name of it until the second book when Hermione, unsurprisingly, informed him that he could speak Parseltongue. The ability would reappear on and off throughout the series until the real reveal hit.
Harry himself didn’t have the ability of Parseltongue. Rather, it was a sign that he was a vessel for Voldemort’s horcrux. While it was definitely useful in ridding the world of the Dark Lord once and for all, it disappeared when Voldemort’s Horcrux in Harry perished. In the years since then, Harry has lost all understanding of the language of snakes.
4 Sports Editor of The Daily Prophet
Following years of being the Senior Quidditch Correspondent, Ginny would eventually take over the sports section of The Daily Prophet. It’s unclear when exactly this happened, but we know that it took place between 2014 and 2017/2018 due to the events of The Cursed Child.
Given her dedication and passion for Quidditch, her intelligence, and her leadership ability, it’s definitely a perfect job for Ginny.
In her role as Sports Editor, Ginny likely had a contingent of writers reporting on the various sporting events of the Wizarding World-- mainly Quidditch, but there’s also a professional Gobstones League, so who knows how many sports there are?
3 Harry became Director of The Department Of Magical Law Enforcement
After running the Auror Division, presumably after Hermione Granger’s win for Minister of Magic, Harry Potter became the Director for the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. His new position requires him to oversee the largest department within the Ministry of Magic. Also, presumably, like Amelia Bones before him, he would have to preside over a full Wizengamot trial when it was called for.
He also would be in charge of departments like the Improper Use of Magic Office, the Hit Wizards, the various administrative divisions, Misuse of Muggle Artifacts, and about a half of dozen others. Hopefully, he would continue to make sure such departments remained free of corruption that brought about the Second Wizarding War.
2 Harry Helped Reform The Ministry Of Magic
It’s easy to see that the Ministry of Magic was hugely corrupt as Harry Potter grew up in the series. Under Minister of Magic Kingsley Shacklebolt, there was a revolutionary approach to cleaning up the Ministry, though, to be fair, the Ministry could not have reach more lows, not that we wanted to see it try.
New Aurors Harry Potter and Ron Weasley helped revolutionize the Auror Department. Following her graduation from Hogwarts, Hermione Granger would also bring her own ideas and common sense to the Ministry of Magic.
Eventually, they were able to make the Ministry and the Wizarding World a better place for their own children.
All was well, after all-- until the Cursed Child started anyway.
1 They Became Godparents To Ron And Hermione’s Children
The Golden Trio were each other’s best friends and closest confidantes. In the end, is really that big of a surprise that they would be godparents to each other’s children? In 2005, Harry and Ginny made Ron and Hermione godparents to James Sirius Potter. When Rose Granger-Weasley was born a year later, Ron and Hermione returned the favor. Presumably, they were godparents to each other’s children in order to make sure that the children all ended up in the same home should the worst happen.
This was just a capper to show the bond that the Golden Trio and Ginny share.
The worst did not happen, but it’s good to know that they are bound as family.
