Jensen Ackles Isn’t Playing the Arrowverse's Batman, Says Stephen Amell

Arrow star Stephen Amell has shot down the rumor that Supernatural lead Jensen Ackles is playing Batman in the Arrowverse. Amell is currently in the middle of filming the 2018 Arrowverse crossover event "Elseworlds", which will bring three of The CW's DC TV series (Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl) together to participate in a three-part storyline. "Elseworlds" will also feature Tyler Hoechlin's Superman in his famous black suit and introduce Ruby Rose as Katherine Kane aka. Batwoman to the Arrowverse before her solo series premieres in 2019 - among other things.

Seeing as "Elseworlds" will mark the first time the Arrowverse has paid a visit to Gotham City, many fans have wondered if that means the Caped Crusader himself will likewise make an appearance (however brief) during the crossover. Arrow and Supergirl have both included overt references to Bruce Wayne's alter ego in recent memory and, just this week, Amell once again refused to rule out the possibility of Batman showing up in the Arrowverse, some day. All the same, Amell took a brief break from filming and/or promoting "Elseworlds" to dismiss at least one persistent rumor involving the Caped Crusader.

Dean Winchester himself only just paid a visit to the "Elseworlds" set, which immediately sent many fans into Batman conspiracy theory mode. As such, Amell took to his Twitter account to shed some light on Ackles' visit to the crossover's set and explain what he was not there for:

It's further worth noting that the Batman character is very unlikely to make his Arrowverse debut during "Elseworlds", given that Batwoman is already confirmed to make her grand entrance during the TV event. Odds are, if the character ever does show up in The CW's DC universe, it will be down the line, well after Rose's Katherine Kane is properly established and her own series is fully up and running. After all, Hoechlin as Superman didn't show up in the Arrowverse until Supergirl's season 2 premiere and has only been an occasional guest star on the show since then. It stands to reason that the Batwoman TV series (or any Arrowverse show, for that matter) will take a similar approach to incorporating Batman - again, assuming he's ever introduced at all, much less referenced again during "Elseworlds".

As for Ackles: as much as many (most?) of his fans would love to see him put on the cape and cowl, he seems pretty comfortable focusing his time and energy on Supernatural at the moment. The series only just began its fourteenth season and may well return for season 15 a year from now, the way the fan-favorite show keeps on chugging along. One should never say never, of course, but if the actor ever does end up playing Batman... well, it probably won't be while Oliver Queen and Barry Allen are switching identities in "Elseworlds".
