Supergirl Season 4 Confirmed to Introduce Lex Luthor

Lex Luthor is finally set to make his Arrowverse debut in Supergirl season 4. The infamous Superman villain has been frequently name-dropped on the show since his sister Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) became a main character back in season 2. The Man of Steel himself (Tyler Hoechlin) made his Arrowverse debut that same season and will finally be joined by Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) during The CW's DC TV Elseworlds crossover event later this year. The three-part event will further see Hoechlin don Superman's black suit for the first time.

With Jimmy Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) likewise a key player on the show and more and more of the larger Superman mythology being incorporated, that leaves Lex as the last major piece to the puzzle that Supergirl has yet to formally introduce. The Arrowverse version of the character is currently in prison and his company Luthor Corp has since been taken over by Lena and rebranded L-Corp, as a reflection of the latter's efforts to separate herself from her family's dark legacy. Unfortunately for Lena, that's going to be more difficult than ever in season 4, now that Lex is set to enter the picture again.

Current Supergirl showrunners Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner have officially confirmed that Lex will make his debut on the series in season 4, via the following statement:

“We’re beyond excited to introduce iconic villain, Lex Luthor, to Supergirl and to weave him into our story this season. We’ve talked about having Lex on the show since it’s inception and we’re excited to have him finally arrive.  We can’t wait for him to shake things up in National City and watch him go toe to toe with not only Supergirl, but his sister Lena Luthor.”

There's already speculation among fans that Lex has resumed his criminal activities behind bars in the Supergirl universe. The season 4 premiere episode, "American Alien", featured an appearance by Lex's former head of security Mercy Graves (Rhona Mitra) and her brother Otis (Robert Baker), as they attempted to fan the flames of growing anti-extraterrestrial sentiment in National City and the world at large. They ultimately succeeded in doing just that, after they launched an attack on Camp David that forced Lynda Carter's U.S. President Olivia Marsdin to reveal that she is an alien in disguise, herself.

Question is, were Mercy and Otis acting on Lex's orders? While it's possible that Lex is innocent in this case and that the Graves were acting solely on behalf of the season 4 antagonist Agent Liberty (Sam Witwer), it's just as plausible that Lex was involved somehow and/or that he plans to use the rise in anti-alien sentiment to his advantage (maybe even to try and get his 32 consecutive life sentences reduced). Either way, it will be just as interesting to learn how Lex fits into the plot this season as it will be to find out who's playing him, seeing as there hasn't been a live-acton Lex Luthor on TV since Michael Rosebaum's iteration from Smallville.
