A Fortnite fan has figured out what a first-person mode would look like in the popular online shooter. Unlike its main competition PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, Fortnite: Battle Royale can only be played with one type of camera mode. Fortnite: Battle Royale is, and likely always will be, a third-person shooter.
Battle Royale is built on the same engine as the original Fortnite, which was a cartoony base-building cooperative survival game that was all in third-person. Although Battle Royale has changed a lot since launch, the option to play in a first person mode hasn't been added. Yet that hasn't stopped speculation of what a possible FPS Fortnite would look and play like if it did exist. The answer isn't that pretty.

Fortnite: Battle Royale's very unofficial first-person mode comes courtesy of YouTuber Max Box. Inspired by a bevy of fake FPS Fortnite videos on the internet, the YouTube gamer decided to mod the ultra popular shooter to create a "real" FPS mode. A video was posted to Max Box's YouTube channel to show off their handiwork. Even though the gameplay video is prefaced by a message warning that Fortnite is being forced to do something unnatural and it may look unstable, the results are still rough. FPS Fortnite is glitchy and jumpy.
Max Box should be praised for finding a way to make Fortnite: Battle Royale work at all in first-person. It's still clear that the game is not meant to be played with this view point in mind. Nevertheless it's interesting to see Fortnite's character models (of opposing players) much more close up than previously possible. The visual comparisons of Fortnite to a game like Overwatch are even more obvious in first-person. Overall the first-person mode emphasizes the detail that developer Epic Games has put into their shooter. Even though Fortnite: Battle Royale is presented in third-person, the guns still have the same recoil and kick that they would have in first-person. Although that recoil could just be some of the bugginess created by the mod.
Speaking of the bugginess, some the most awkward sections of the video can be found in Fortnite's unique building mode. Besides its more colorful aesthetic, the main way that Fortnite separates itself from PUBG (and most other competitive shooters) is in its building mechanics. The goal of Fortnite: Battle Royale is the same as any Battle Royale mode - annihilate every other player - but that success rate can be made significantly easier by building the eponymous forts of wood, stone and metal. While Fortnite is mainly a third-person game because of technical reasons, the third-person point of view also gives a wide perspective of where structures can and should go. In first-person, all that range is cut down, making building a much more chaotic and confusing process.
It's for this reason that Fortnite: Battle Royale will probably never get a permanent first-person mode. Building would not only be hampered but the ability for players to see their own creative Fortnite skins would be lost entirely. The various skins and designs of Fortnite characters are half of the game's identity and reason to buy its seasonal Battle Pass. Epic would never want to lose that aspect of their game. Fortnite season 6 has even doubled down on the creative nature of the third-person view by giving players backpacks with adorable pets - pets that would be completely invisible in first-person.
