Warning: SPOILERS Below For Bodyguard Season 1!
-
Will there be a Bodyguard season 2, and when will it release? The hit series starring Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) caused a sensation in the UK when it aired on BBC One in August. Netflix then purchased the international streaming rights and, now that Bodyguard has debuted in the United States, the series is expected to also be a hit on this side of the Atlantic. Naturally, the question becomes whether there will be continuing adventures for Police Sergeant David Budd.
In Bodyguard, Budd, a former soldier who suffers from untreated PTSD following his tours of duty in Afghanistan, successfully stops a suicide bombing aboard a London-bound train. He is subsequently assigned to protect the Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes), an ambitious Conservative who wants greater powers in the interest of increased national security, though her proposal will infringe on privacy and civil rights. Budd and the Home Secretary's cool professional relationship becomes very personal as Montague becomes the target of multiple assassination attempts as well as a conspiracy within the British government to disgrace her political career. Meanwhile, Budd's unprofessional behavior invites suspicion from his superiors as he works to uncover the conspiracy, which ultimately also threatens his wife Vicky (Sophie Rundle) and their young children.

Bodyguard ended with the major plot threads of the story resolved and Budd received a happy ending, yet it's definitely open-ended enough for a continuation. What that possibility in mind, here's what we know so far about a new season of Bodyguard:
There Is No Bodyguard Season 2 In The Works (Yet)
At present, there aren't any plans for a season 2 of Bodyguard. Series creator Jed Mercurio told Entertainment Weekly "Not at all" when asked whether the BBC has requested another season. However, the series proved to be a bigger hit than anticipated and was a water-cooler sensation for British audiences. The first episode's ratings made it the biggest launch of a UK drama in over a decade and the series only got bigger each week; 10.4-million people watched the season finale live, which became the most-watched drama episode since modern UK records began.
With a massive reception like that, plus the hoped-for reaction on Netflix from US audiences, it's only a matter of time there's a season 2. Mercurio is currently the showrunner for Line of Duty (which streams on Hulu in the U.S.), but he hopes Bodyguard could continue for 3 or 4 seasons.
When Would Bodyguard Season 2 Release?
The first season of Bodyguard filmed on location in and around London over a six month period before it premiered in August 2018. A similar production schedule for season 2 would only make an August 2019 release date in the UK feasible if a new season were ordered soon and begins shooting in the winter of 2019. As of yet, no scripts for a second season have been produced, so unless the order for more episodes comes before the end of the year, it's unlikely that fans will see David Budd again until late 2019 at the earliest.

What Will Be Bodyguard Season 2's Story?
Even though Budd failed to protect Julia Montague, he did successfully clear his name of suspicion and uncovered who was behind the assassination plot. He also revealed the conspiracy within MI-5 and the House of Commons to disgrace Montague. The titular bodyguard was reunited with his estranged family and finally sought help for his PTSD, leaving him in a far better place.
However, Budd's story is poised to continue: there's a possible retaliation from organized crime against Budd for capturing their leader, who was in league with Budd's boss, Police Superintendant Lorraine Craddock (Pippa Haywood). Nadia Ali (Anjii Mohindra) also revealed herself to be the terrorist mastermind Budd sought all along and could return. David Budd may also face an all-new crisis entirely in Bodyguard season 2, where he could potentially protect a foreign dignitary or a member of the Royal Family.
