Zack Snyder offers an explanation for an element of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice's pivotal Martha Kent (Diane Lane) subplot. While Warner Bros. kicked off their superhero movie franchise DCEU with 2013's Man of Steel, it wasn't until 2016's team-up film featuring the return of Henry Cavill's Superman and the debut of Ben Affleck's Bruce Wayne/Batman that their hopes of officially getting into a shared cinematic universe was solidified.
It's been more than two years since Batman V Superman, but like Justice League, it remains a favorite topic of conversation among fans. Between the significant amount of footage cut that wasn't shown in theaters (but can be viewed on home video) and several plot seeds that were planted only to never be revisited again, there's so much to talk about when it comes to the film. However, there's arguably one controversial subplot that people have discussed over and over again: The Martha Kent kidnapping sequence.

From Superman and Lex Luthor's conversation on the roof to Batman's "why did you say that name" line several minutes later, the whole thing has been dissected countless times. Now, however, it's Snyder's time to chime in on the conversation. The filmmaker explained on his official Vero account (via CinemaBlend) why Clark didn't find his mother on his own, despite the fact that he fully knows he's capable of locating her, as he was able to do the same for Lois (Amy Adams).
It is a green screen shot. He flies up above the city and hovers. The camera begins to rotate around him as he hears the Cries of citywide crime going on and as we get closer, he is in pain because he knows if he try's to find her this way, he will have to ignore the countless crimes going on in the two cities and the world.
Sadly, at this point, Cavill's Superman and Affleck's Batman are no longer the focal point of the franchise. Both of DCEU's pioneer actors' fates in the film series are currently in limbo, with Warner Bros. continuing to be mum about the matter. Affleck has long been rumored to be out, with Matt Reeves' taking over the in-development The Batman standalone movie, and a new and younger actor rumored to over the role. Cavill, on the other hand, has yet to reach an agreement with the studio, and is currently busying himself with other projects like Netflix's The Witcher.
As with the actors he cast as two of the most iconic superheroes on the big screen, the DCEU appears to also be slowly moving farther away from Snyder's original vision for the franchise, and Justice League's revamped narrative was the first step toward that. Of course, considering that the filmmaker had a hand in picking Gal Gadot/Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, and Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash - all of which are still slated to appear in their respective standalone films - Snyder's fingerprints will still be all over the DCEU, it's just going to be a different cinematic franchise overall than he initially envisioned it to be.
