Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar has decided to show her love for DC by dressing up as Harley Quinn for Halloween. Gellar has had a long, successful career in Hollywood, but she remains best known for her role as Buffy Summers. Joss Whedon’s series so captured the hearts of audiences that fans continue to express enthusiasm for the series 15 years after the show’s end. This year, Gellar went and showed support for a beloved fandom of her own.
Another fan-favorite from the 1990s, Harley Quinn, was originally planned as one-time character in Batman: The Animated Series but became so popular she was accepted into the comics. Since then, her story has been told and retold. She finally made it to the big screen in 2016’s Suicide Squad. The movie was panned by critics but Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) was considered one of the film’s breakouts. While DC appears to be questioning the future of some characters, they are confident Harley Quinn will be a big part of the DCEU. DC is said to have plans for four Harley-centric films with Birds of Prey as their next project. While there is no word yet whether all the planned movies will be made, fans can be sure they’ll get to see plenty more Harley in the future.

Gellar posted a photo on her Instagram dressed up as the Suicide Squad rendition of Harley Quinn, complete with “Daddy’s Lil’ Monster” shirt and the two-tone hair. And what Harley Quinn costume would be complete without the signature mallet?
While some versions of Harley are more popular than others, she remains as beloved now as she was years ago. Harley Quinn remains so popular in fact that she is the most popular Halloween costume in three states (beaten out by Wonder Woman with 21). That fans continue to gravitate towards the Suicide Squad costume despite negative feelings for the film itself says a lot about how strongly fans feel for the character.
Gellar has joined countless others in showing their love for one of DC’s most popular characters. The continued enthusiasm for Harley Quinn two years after her last big screen debut speaks to the influence she continues to have. It’s also a good sign for DC with all their potential Harley Quinn movies waiting to be made. With Birds of Prey coming out in 2020, odds are audiences are going to be seeing plenty more Harley Quinns in Halloweens to come.
