DC will release two female-led superhero comic book movies in 2020 - Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman 1984 - ensuring Warner Bros. will do so before other studios, like Marvel Studios. Warner Bros. has had some growing pains as the studio launched its DC cinematic universe. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and Justice League received mixed reactions from critics and fans alike and while the former two performed well enough at the box office, the studio's team-up film had an underwhelming run. So far, the one unequivocal hit of the current DC film franchise is Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, which was well received by moviegoers and earned over $800 million at the box office.
Warner Bros' Wonder Woman also earned the honor of being the first female-led comic book movie to hit theaters in over a decade - with 2005's Elektra being the last before it. That meant Warner Bros. had beaten both 20th Century Fox's modern X-Men franchise and Marvel Studios' Marvel Cinematic Universe in delivering a woman-led comic book movie. Now, though Marvel is ramping up to release Captain Marvel in 2019 and Black Widow potentially in 2020, and Sony has solo Black Cat and Silver Sable movies in the works, Warner Bros. will again outpace its competition.

With Birds of Prey releasing in February 2020 and Wonder Woman 1984 now set for the summer release window in that same year, Warner Bros' DC franchise will officially be the first to release two female-led comic book movies in one year. Jenkins' Wonder Woman sequel was originally slated for a late 2019 release, but was recently pushed back to summer 2020. Now, it will arrive four months after Cathy Yan's Birds of Prey, which will see Suicide Squad's Margot Robbie reprise her role as Harley Quinn and team up with female DC comics heroes, including Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).
Further, with Warner Bros. releasing 2-3 DC movies a year and 2020 now featuring two female-centric superhero movies, it's almost assured the studio's slate that year will be dominated by women-led comic book films. Considering the wealth of superhero movies that have hit theaters over the last decade, and how few of them were led by women, 2020 will prove to be not only a major milestone for representation in DC's film slate, but for Hollywood in general. For years, fans have been calling for more diverse representation in terms of what characters lead comic book movies. Now, Warner Bros. will deliver two female-led superhero movies in one year - with Birds of Prey also featuring a team of multiple women of color between Smollett-Bell's Black Canary and Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya.
Of course, that's not to say other studios aren't making a push for more diverse representation in their comic book movies. As previously stated, Marvel Studios has two female-led movies in the pipeline, and since much of their future slate is unknown, there could be more in the early stages of development. Plus, Sony is also looking to develop solo and team-up films starring female Marvel characters - though it's unclear when the first of these will arrive in theaters. As for Fox, with their movie and TV assets being acquired by Marvel Studios parent company Disney, it seems unlikely that Kitty Pryde movie will ever be made - at least, not by Fox.
So, unless any release slates change, Warner Bros. will continue to pave the way for female-led superhero movies by releasing two such films in one year. While it remains to be seen whether Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman 1984 are hits for the studio, fans may at least be excited to see female DC characters take center stage in 2020.
