Disney's Upcoming Movie Releases - From 2018 to 2023

At the moment, Disney more than two dozen movies on the way - animated and live-action - that will release over the next five years. In recent years, they've seen considerable success with their live-action remakes, such as Beauty and the Beast, as well as animated properties like Moana, and they're continuing to push the envelope into the 2020s.

While Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe are a big piece of the Disney pie, the company still has plenty of upcoming movies that fall under the brand of family-friendly fairy tales and adventures, many of which make up the bulk of their release slate. Here's a rundown of every upcoming non-Marvel/Star Wars Disney movie releasing from 2018 to 2023.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 - November 21, 2018

The follow-up to Disney’s 2012 hit Wreck-It Ralph, Ralph Breaks the Internet picks up with our computer game hero when a Wifi router gets plugged into the arcade game. The adventures he might have in the vast playground of the internet (not to mention the endless potential for jokes) is something to look forward to. The original voice cast returns: John C. Reilly as Wreck-It Ralph, Sarah Silverman as Vanellope, Jack McBrayer as Fix-It Felix Jr., and Jane Lynch as Sergeant Calhoun. Alan Tudyk and James Corden are also listed among the cast.

Mary Poppins Returns - December 25, 2018

Disney will round out 2018 with perhaps the most star-studded movie of them all (Marvel offerings excluded). A sequel to Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Returns is releasing with Emily Blunt playing the titular nanny. Opposite her is Lin-Manuel Miranda as lamplighter Jack, his first major film role. Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw, Julie Walters, and Emily Mortimer co-star. Best of all, though, Mary Poppins Returns sees Angela Lansbury appearing as a balloon seller, and Dick van Dyke singing and dancing as George Dawes Jr. - one of the roles he played in Mary Poppins, 54 years prior.

Naturally, this is a full musical, and it’s set to be huge. Anticipation is high, along with a healthy dose of curiosity over whether anyone can really play Mary Poppins other than Julie Andrews. Trailers and photos look fantastic; the depression-era London setting standing out as scenes were filmed in St James’ Park with Miranda and Blunt on bikes. The movie is directed by Rob Marshall, who also helmed Into the Woods for Disney.

Dumbo - March 29, 2019

Tim Burton's live-action Dumbo movie is the first non-Marvel and non-Star Wars Disney movie to release in 2019. It's something that has been in development for quite some time, and its star-studded cast - which consists of the likes of Colin Farrell, Eva Green, Danny DeVito, and Michael Keaton, among others - aims to retell the iconic story for a new generation. While it's technically a live-action remake of Disney's movie, it's very much an original story that takes inspiration from the animated film as well as Helen Aberson and Harold Pearl's novel of the same name.

Aladdin - May 24, 2019

Guy Ritchie is bringing his unique filmmaking style to Disney's doors with his live-action remake of Aladdin, starring Mena Massoud as the eponymous character, with Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, Will Smith as the Genie, and Marwan Kenzari as the villain Jafar. It's a high-profile release for the Mouse House, which is why they're giving the film a prime summer release date, which is just a few weeks after Anthony and Joe Russo's Avengers 4 hits theaters.

Toy Story 4 - June 21, 2019

Toy Story 4 is finally releasing in June 2019 after receiving multiple delays, and it’s claimed the spot that was originally taken by The Incredibles 2. While Toy Story 4 is a movie Pixar has been pushing in recent years, it underwent numerous changes behind the scenes; everything from its director - John Lasseter was replaced by Josh Cooley - to its script was practically changed, but that's perhaps for the better.

Tom Hanks and Tim Allen back as Woody and Buzz, respectively, with some new toys joining the lineup as well. Toy Story 4 is a standalone movie rather than a continuation of the previous trilogy. And while the movie was originally supposed to focus on Woody's relationship with Bo Peep, the story has shifted in development - but it's gone in a direction that Allen believes will be very emotional for audiences.

The Lion King - July 19, 2019

Another Disney classic getting the live-action treatment is The Lion King, which has assembled an all-star voice cast. Donald Glover plays the adult Simba, and to the delight of everyone, James Earl Jones voices Mufasa (there couldn’t be anyone else). Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner team up to deliver all the wit and wisdom of Timon and Pumbaa. The Lion King is directed by Jon Favreau; a safe pair of hands after his success with The Jungle Book. While fans of The Lion King animated movie were hoping for Jeremy Irons to return as the voice of Scar, Chiwetel Ejiofor has been cast in that role and is an exceptional choice for the iconic character.

Artemis Fowl - August 9, 2019

Kenneth Branagh is returning to Disney after helming 2015's Cinderella live-action remake to direct their long-awaited adaptation of Eoin Colfer's novel Artemis Fowl. After spending several years stuck in development hell, Artemis Fowl finally entered production in 2017, with newcomer Ferdia Shaw starring as the eponymous character. Nonso Anozie, Judi Dench, and Josh Gad are among the many other actors and actresses on the cast list.

Frozen 2 - November 22, 2019

This is going to be huge, make no mistake. Disney will be aiming for a repeat performance of Frozen that captured the whole world back in 2013. The question is, will that ever happen, or has Frozen’s original fanbase (namely those under 10) moved on? The curse of the sequel is a hard thing to evade, even for Disney, and six years is a long time to wait for more adventures with Olaf, Elsa, and Anna in Frozen 2. Then again, it comes with several new songs for fans to get attached to and... not let go.

Page 3 of 5: Disney's Upcoming 2020 Movies

Untitled Disney Live-Action Movie - February 14, 2020

Disney's first movie of 2020 is currently an untitled live-action film. Since it's in February 2020 and there isn't a clear sign of what it could be, not to mention the fact that nothing significant is on the docket to enter production soon, it's possible that this date will ultimately be removed from Disney's schedule. Plus, the Mouse House may not want to compete directly DC's Birds of Prey (which would be in its second weekend of release) or Bond 25.

Untitled Pixar Animation - March 6, 2020

In the animation field, Pixar is getting the ball rolling for 2020, releasing their next untitled movie on March 6. While this movie will be coming off the heels of Toy Story 4, it's been reported that this will be an original project from one of their top-tier creators, such as Pete Docter or perhaps Mark Andrews, who's been working on a project for Pixar since 2013.

Mulan - March 27, 2020

The live-action version of Mulan will release more than 20 years after its animated original. Director Niki Caro caused some backlash early on when she suggested that the remake might not be a musical (and, therefore, wouldn't include Disney classic "I'll Make Man Out Of You"). Needless to say, Caro has since backtracked and said the movie will definitely include music in some capacity. Disney have also made the effort to cast Chinese actors in the roles, with Liu Yifei playing the titular character. Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Jet Li, and more join the supporting cast.

Maleficent 2 - May 29, 2020

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales co-director Joachim Rønning is helming Maleficent 2, a sequel to 2014's Maleficent movie starring Angelina Jolie as the eponymous character and Elle Fanning as Aurora. In addition to Juno Temple, Sam Reilly, and more reprising their roles from the first movie, Michelle Pfeiffer and Chiwetel Ejiofor, among a few others, will be joining the series for the first time in new roles. Filming began exactly two years prior to its release date and concluded in August 2018, thus giving the creative team a long post-production process to nail down the movie's visual effects.

Untitled Pixar Animation - June 19, 2020

Pixar's second untitled movie of 2020 is also an original project from one of their creative filmmakers. Again, this could be something either from Pete Docter, Mark Andrews, Teddy Newton, or Brian Fee. One thing is for sure, though, it's not a sequel, and it's not a continuation to any of their franchises, such as Cars and Finding Nemo. It could, however, be the "fantasy world" film from Monsters University's Dan Scanlon.

Jungle Cruise - July 24, 2020

Originally slated to release in October 2019, Disney's Jungle Cruise, an adaptation of their iconic Disneyland ride from director Jaume Collet-Serra, is now scheduled to be the studio's big mid-summer release in 2020. And the new release date makes sense considering that Emily Blunt (their new Mary Poppins) and Dwayne Johnson (one of the most popular actors in the world) are headlining the film, which appears to be billed as Disney's next Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Untitled Disney Live-Action Movie - October 9, 2020

This is an instance in which a release date might be removed, but it will be for a rather unique reason for Disney: it will be due to their Disney-Fox deal. At the moment, Disney will reportedly release all-completed 20th Century Fox movies (or, at least, films that are in production by the time they acquire Fox). Considering that Kenneth Branagh's Murder on the Orient Express sequel, Death on the Nile, is scheduled to release on October 2, 2020, Disney may not want to compete with a movie they distributing, so this date could ultimately be removed from the schedule.

Untitled Disney Live-Action Movie - December 23, 2020

Disney typically avoids December releases, at least they have been ever since they started releasing Star Wars sequels in that month. But that changed in 2018, with Mary Poppins Returns. In 2020, since there won't be another Star Wars movie releasing in the holiday season, the date is open for the Mouse House to swoop in. However, considering that Walt Disney Pictures will take control of the Avatar franchise, thanks to their Disney-Fox deal, it makes sense that this particular date will be removed from the schedule so that Disney can release Avatar 2 on December 18.

Page 4 of 5: Disney's Upcoming 2021 Movies

Untitled Disney Live-Action Movie - March 12, 2021

At the rate in which Disney is producing live-action movies, especially ones based on their past animated films, it's possible that this date could be reserved for the long in-development Pinocchio movie. Paddington's Paul King is directing the film and the script is currently being worked on. Since it was reported that filming on Pinocchio could begin in either 2019 or 2020, it makes sense to release the movie in March 2021. Plus, that release date would coincide with Disney's past live-action remake releases, such as Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Dumbo - all of which have released in March of their respective years.

Untitled Disney Live-Action Movie - May 28, 2021

One project that is routinely in the news these days is Disney's live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. While the Mouse House has more than just live-action remakes in the works, it stands to reason that a movie like The Little Mermaid would do well in a prime summer release date. Guy Ritchie's Aladdin movie will be a good test for this. While there's no one currently attached to the project, it's been reported that Mary Poppins Returns' Rob Marshall is Disney's top choice to direct. It's certainly possible that he may board the adaptation depending on how successful his Mary Poppins sequel turns out. If he does take the job, then it would be his fourth Disney movie in a row, the previous ones being Mary Poppins Returns, Into the Woods, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Untitled Pixar Animation - June 18, 2021

Unfortunately, as with Pixar's 2020 movies, there's no telling what their June 2021 movie will be. However, it must be something big for them to carve out yet another June release date. Aside from Toy Story 4 releasing in June 2019, Pixar has released Cars 3, Finding Dory, Inside Out, and Monsters University in June over the past few years - three of which are sequels. Even though Pixar previously stated in 2016 that they weren't considering any sequels to previous movies, it's possible they could've changed their mind by now. And among all their movies that warrant a sequel, most people want to see another Inside Out. While there's nothing to suggest that Inside Out 2 is in development, it could certainly be produced by the time 2021 rolls around if Pixar is interested in making it happen.

Indiana Jones 5 - July 9, 2021

Even though the Indiana Jones franchise is a Lucasfilm production, it's not a Star Wars film, which is why it's on this list. It was long believed that Indiana Jones 5 would happen at some point after Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, and that belief came true when the studio announced in 2016 plans to produce another Indiana Jones movie. Unfortunately, it's been delayed multiple times since then - first from 2019 to 2020, and then again one more time to 2021. Indiana Jones 5, which sees Steven Spielberg return as director and Harrison Ford return in the title role, is now being written by Solo: A Star Wars Story co-writer Jon Kasdan.

Untitled Disney Live-Action Movie - July 30, 2021

Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book 2 could potentially release in July 2021. The filmmaker released his first Jungle Book movie in 2016 and then almost immediately began working on a live-action adaptation of The Lion King (live-action in the way that it's filmed). While there's a three-year gap between The Jungle Book and The Lion King hitting theaters, it stands to reason that Favreau would have perfected making these movies by the time he gets going on The Jungle Book 2. Plus, it shouldn't take as long to make a sequel than it is to start an entirely new project altogether.

Untitled Disney Live-Action Movie - October 8, 2021

Among their many, many live-action movies in development, it's possible that Disney may attempt to release one of their live-action remakes in the fall season, particularly one that is closely associated with Halloween. It would be a step in a new direction for them, especially since they don't typically release movies in this time-frame. Taking that into account, their live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves could release in this date, but they would need to get the ball rolling on that project sooner rather than later.

Untitled Disney Animation - November 24, 2021

While there are two Pixar movies hitting theaters in 2021, Disney has slotted the prime Thanksgiving release date for one of their Disney Animation films. It's a time-frame they've seen astounding success with in recent years and not something they want to let go of. Even though they have quite a few projects in development, it's nearly impossible to tell what this could be. However, it's plausible that Lin-Manuel Miranda's secret Disney Animation project could debut in 2021, depending, of course, on when it enters production.

Untitled Disney Live-Action Movie - December 22, 2021

Again, it stands to reason that every one of Disney's upcoming live-action movies that are scheduled to release in December - from 2020 until 2023 - could be replaced with James Cameron's Avatar sequels. In this case, that would be Avatar 3, which is reportedly titled Avatar: The Seed Bearer. It has already completed production and is now in the post-production phase.

Page 5 of 5: Disney's Upcoming 2022 & 2023 Movies

Disney's Upcoming 2022 & 2023 Movies

Walt Disney Pictures is one of the biggest movie studios in the world, so it makes sense for them to plan out their release schedule for the next five years, from now through 2023. Unfortunately, they have so many projects in development that it's near impossible to figure out which movies will release when, and that doesn't even include all the ones that are releasing from Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios.

After J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters in December 2019, the Mouse House won't have any other Star Wars movie on the schedule, despite having multiple films in development from people such as Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson and Game of Thrones TV series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Any of the aforementioned untitled Disney live-action release dates could theoretically be reserved for one of those Star Wars movies; however, none of them are being held for Marvel, seeing as Marvel Studios has their own release dates carved out for the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 4 and possibly Phase 5.

Aside from those projects, though, Disney has at least more than three dozen movies - both animation and live-action - in various stages of development. Some of those films were announced several years ago and are stuck in development hell, while others are continuing to progress smoothly behind the scenes. In either case,, though, it's difficult to tell exactly where they are in the development process, so any of the below release dates could be claimed by one of those movies.

  • Untitled Pixar Animation - 3/18/22
  • Untitled Disney Live Action - 5/27/22
  • Untitled Pixar Animation - 6/17/22
  • Untitled Disney Live Action - 7/8/22
  • Untitled Disney Live Action - 10/7/22
  • Untitled Disney Live Action - 11/4/22
  • Untitled Disney Animation - 11/23/22
  • Untitled Disney Live Action - 12/16/22
  • Untitled Disney Live Action - 2/17/23

Again, the December release date may very well be removed and replaced with James Cameron's Avatar sequels. For December 2022, that would be Avatar 4. As for the rest, those release dates could be taken by virtually any movie. What's interesting, though, is that Disney only has one movie currently slated for 2023 - and it's a date they're fairly comfortable with. Of course, Disney will have more than one movie releasing in that year, but they just haven't thought that far ahead yet.

Considering that release dates are in a constant state of flux, especially with rival studios like Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. continuing to solidify their plans, some if not all of these dates may change down the line. Plus, it's possible that any of these dates may be occupied by 20th Century Fox films once the acquisition is complete. But, for now, it looks like Disney is preparing themselves to release five live-action movies, two Pixar movies, and one Disney Animation movie in 2022, with 2023 kicking off with another live-action film.
