Early concept art for Avengers: Infinity War shows Doctor Strange transporting Thanos to another dimension. Not only were the Mad Titan and Sorcerer Supreme two characters who received significant screen time and development in the movie, their individual paths met on Titan where they showed their full display of powers.
Although Marvel Studios set up both Thanos and Doctor Strange in earlier stages of the MCU, it was Avengers: Infinity War that revealed the most dynamic aspects of the two characters. Benedict Cumberbatch made his debut in 2016's Doctor Strange solo movie, while Josh Brolin appeared as Thanos in Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as the mid-credits scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron. The two supremely powerful beings finally collided in Avengers: Infinity War's climax and put on display a dazzling show-stopping performance. Thanos utilized the power of the Infinity Gauntlet, while Doctor Strange combatted the Mad Titan with spells. It was the ultimate "Wizard Duel," and it nearly turned out to be even more epic than what the final cut of the film presented.

This dimension-jumping encounter was highlighted in The Art of Avengers: Infinity War by producer Trinh Tran. She discussed Marvel's excitement about its creation as a whole, saying, "Audiences only got to see a glimpse of what he [Doctor Strange] was like in his own movie, but in Infinity War we really wanted to put him against Thanos and give them a moment, because Thanos had a majority of the stones so he had quite a bit of power to play with." According to the book, however, the extent of Doctor Strange's power was even larger than what he showed off in the movie itself, and the team's grander plan evidently included Strange transporting Thanos to a different dimension.
As epic as the Titan battle may have turned out, concept art reveals an even grander scale in terms of action. Thanos is shown hurling giant asteroid-like formations at Doctor Strange, who has formed a protective shield around him. There's also a different example of Thanos throwing some kind of fiery substance at Strange (not Iron Man, who was a target for Thanos in the movie). That said, the most intriguing takeaway is that Doctor Strange and Thanos nearly fought each other across multiple dimensions in an effort for the Avengers to potentially level the playing field - even though it never made it to the final script.
Since Strange was turned to dust by Thanos' snap in Avengers: Infinity War, it is currently unknown whether or not we'll get to see a "Wizard Duel" rematch in Avengers 4. This all comes down to how exactly characters who perished following Thanos' finger snap will return, not to mention how soon they return. That said, given the rumors circulating a new villain replacing Thanos in Avengers 4, there's even a chance that enough damage will have already been done to Thanos by the time Doctor Strange makes his return that a follow-up fight may be unnecessary.
