Nearly two decades after its initial release, Mariah Carey's soundtrack for the movie Glitter topped the iTunes chart with the help of a dedicated fan campaign. Back in 2001, not only did the movie receive a 7 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the album failed to reach the same commercial success that Carey achieved with other albums throughout her career.
Marking the eighth and least successful of Mariah Carey's studio albums, Glitter accompanied the movie of the same name in which Carey stars as a musician whose rise to stardom is met with personal and professional struggles. Also starring Terrence Howard, Max Beesley, and Da Brat, the film and soundtrack for Glitter (which is perhaps best known for songs like "Loverboy" and "Never Too Far") were both critical failures. That said, the album has seen a sudden resurgence of popularity seventeen years after its release courtesy of Carey's passionate fanbase.

Aligning with the release of her latest album, "Caution," Carey's fanbase (which she refers to as her "lambs" or "lambily") united to push Glitter's album to the number one spot on iTunes, besting a new release from Imagine Dragons and the soundtrack for A Star is Born. Carey has since recognized the album's sudden resurgence and success on her personal Twitter account, while also thanking her fans. She included the hashtag #JusticeForGlitter in her tweet.

Though "Caution" has been met with positive reviews, Carey faced some backlash in recent years during some of her live performances - namely during a live performance of "All I Want for Christmas Is You" at the Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting Ceremony in 2014 and a live 2016 New Years Eve performance in Times Square. That said, Carey fired several members of her staff, including her manager Stella Bulochnikov prior to "Caution," and is in the midst of an official comeback, thanks in part to her fans.
As for Glitter, the comeback isn't entirely surprising in this day and age. In a nod to the overwhelming nostalgia taking hold of the entertainment industry, fans have proven once again that repackaged, preexisting content is something they crave. As unexpected as it might seem for a movie like Glitter to resurface so long after it was released, 2018 has seen the revival of Queen's music in Bohemian Rhapsody, the Conner family in the Roseanne spinoff The Conners, and even Sabrina the Teenage Witch in Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. So, as far as comebacks are concerned, Mariah Carey released her latest album at the absolute perfect time.
