Netflix's Dumplin' Movie Poster, Photos Reveal First Look & Release Date

Netflix's Dumplin', the movie adaptation of Julie Murphy's same-named YA book, releases a poster and first look images confirming the film's premiere date. The streaming service has found a great deal of success in YA adaptations, releasing The Kissing Booth and To All the Boys I've Loved Before this year alone. In fact, To All the Boys I've Loved Before was such a hit for Netflix, fans have been wondering when the company will announce a sequel (based on the second book in the source material's series).

As such, it came as little surprise when Netflix acquired Dumplin' earlier this year, prepping the film for a late 2018 release. The movie follows teenager Willowdean Dickson (Danielle Macdonald), the daughter of former beauty queen Rosie Dickson (Jennifer Aniston) who signs up for the pageant her mother organizes as a form of protest. However, when other atypical beauty pageant contestants follow Willowdean's lead, she finds herself reluctantly leading a revolution - all while struggling with her own self-image. Now, Netflix has released the first look images of Dumplin' and revealed when the movie will be available on the streaming service.

Netflix unveiled the first poster for Dumplin', which features Macdonald in a red pageant dress mimicking Willowdean's pose on the cover of Murphy's novel and Aniston standing slightly back as Rosie. The poster confirms the movie will premiere on Friday, Dec. 7. Additionally, Netflix released three photos from Dumplin', two of Aniston in her beauty pageant tiara and one of Macdonald all dolled up. Check out the poster and photos below.

Directed by Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses, Hot Pursuit) from a script by Kristin Hahn (Disney's Stargirl), Dumplin' also stars Odeya Rush as Willowdean’s best friend Ellen Dryver; Luke Benward as Bo, a boy Willowdean is interested in; and Dove Cameron, Bex Taylor-Klaus and Maddie Baillio as fellow pageant contestants. Plus, since the book is rich with references to country superstar Dolly Parton, the musician is lending her talents to the Dumplin' soundtrack, releasing new recordings of her classic songs for the film.

With veteran leading lady Aniston and rising star Macdonald - who made a splash in 2017's Patti Cake$ - Dumplin' has all the potential to be another massive hit for Netflix. Of course, whether it receives the same huge viewership numbers as To All the Boys I've Loved Before remains to be seen, and likely depends on the streaming service's promotional push as well as word-of-mouth buzz. Additionally, with the month of December being packed with high profile theatrical releases, it's unclear how that will affect the potential viewership of Dumplin'. But, the movie may prove to benefit from the accessibility of being on Netflix, a streamer now known for their teen-geared and rom-com programming.

For now, fans looking forward to the release of Dumplin' next month will have to make due with the poster and first look images - but a trailer should be just around the corner.
