Taika Waititi: Thor Ragnarok's Korg Was Inspired by Nightclub Bouncers

Director of Thor: Ragnarok Taika Waititi reveals that the character Korg was inspired by nightclub bouncers. The third film in the Thor trilogy took place right before the events of Avengers: Infinity War, with the end of Ragnarok literally bringing Thor's ship face to face with Thanos'. While the first two Thor films are often seen as low points for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: Ragnarok has mostly been praised by fans and critics, with a divisiveness just starting to surface.

Thor: Ragnarok is often credited as saving the Thor trilogy, thanks to the direction Waititi decided to take the series. The third film brought back many characters such as Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), and Odin (Anthony Hopkins). The movie introduced several new characters as well, including Thor's sister Hela, played by Cate Blanchett, Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), and the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum). The film also brought the comic character Korg to life, who was played by Waititi through motion-capture. Now that the film has been out for over a year, Waititi sheds some light on what inspired the character.

When appearing on the talk show The Last Leg, Waititi explained that Korg was inspired by Polynesian nightclub bouncers he would encounter in New Zealand. When asked about Korg's accent in the film, Waititi described these bouncers as being, "giant hulking dudes" who have rather delicate and gentle voices. Waititi also joked that Korg's political policies would be to "stamp out all the paper that's plaguing our country at the moment, and it'd be a bit more lenient on the scissor immigration, cause they pose no threat to us". His full interview on The Last Leg can be seen below.

Korg is introduced in Thor: Ragnarok when Thor is first placed in the gladiator's quarters. He is a massive being made of rocks who is part of the Kronan species. Korg starts off his relationship with Thor by making a rock, paper, scissors joke, and becomes a loyal companion to the Asgardian by the end of the film. While Korg is seen as being incredibly powerful in a fight given his daunting stature, he is also used as comedic relief in the film due to his soft-spoken nature.

While Korg wasn't present during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, Kevin Feige has explained that Korg and Miek will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point. For many people, Korg was a scene stealer in Thor: Ragnarok, and the character becomes even more loveable when Waititi explains the inspiration for the giant rock creature. Hopefully, Korg returns to the MCU sooner rather than later.
