Twilight actor Kellan Lutz says that it's probably too soon for a reboot of the franchise, but emerging technologies could pave the way for an innovative new look at the story. The five Twilight movies were released between 2008 and 2012, and told the love story of human teenager Bella Swan and angst-ridden vampire Edward Cullen. The books, written by Stephenie Meyer, sold more than 120 million copies worldwide, and the movies were similarly successful - collectively grossing more than $3 billion at the worldwide box office.
As with any successful franchise, Twilight wasn't laid to rest for long before speculation began about how it might be rebooted or continued. The Harry Potter franchise survived beyond its natural stopping point through the prequel series Fantastic Beasts, but since the release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 we've heard little about the story of Twilight being continued or retold.

Speaking in an interview with Screen Rant, to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Twilight's release, Lutz (who played Edward's fun-loving adoptive brother Emmett Cullen) said that he doesn't see the movies being remade in the near future because not enough time has passed for a remake to add anything new. However, if the landscape of cinema changes one day, it could be time for a new Twilight:
"I could see it being rebooted. Probably not anytime soon because the other movies, the CGI, the budgets, everything was great. I don’t know what more would be different besides having new actors in it. But if somewhere new technology happens, or new VR experiences and you could integrate the fans into the movie, that’d be a new experience."
It's true that the ever-innovating technology of Hollywood can often make remakes worthwhile. For example, Frankenstein was made first as a short silent film, then as a black and white movie with sound, then later remade again (many times) after the era of color pictures kicked in. Even putting different formats like VR aside, the Twilight movies have been criticized for CGI that now looks dated (particularly when it comes to the werewolves), and VFX seems to always be reaching new heights, so we could one day see a reboot of Twilight where the seams between live-action and animation are invisible.
Lutz also discussed the possibility of Twilight spinoffs, and suggested that it would be interesting to see the story of when Emmett was first turned into a vampire by the love of his life, Rosalie, since that moment was never shown in the original films. Given the nature of the movie industry, we'll almost certainly see Twilight either remade, spun off or continued at some point in the future. When that happens, it would actually be kind of cool to experience vampires in VR.
