Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu celebrates Spider-Man’s return to the MCU and pitches a crossover. The actor will portray Shang-Chi in the upcoming Marvel movie, which is set to begin filming this November.
The last couple of months have been quite a roller-coaster ride for Spider-Man fans. After years of being separate from the rest of the MCU, Sony and Marvel reached a deal that would allow Spider-Man to join his fellow heroes onscreen. Tom Holland made his web-slinging debut in Captain America: Civil War and went on to become a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring in two solo films and also appearing in two Avengers movies. Spider-Man: Far From Home not only closed out Phase 3, but also ended on a major cliffhanger. However, it was reported earlier this summer that Sony and Marvel could no longer come to terms, leaving Spider-Man potentially out of the MCU for good. This has caused a major stir among fans, who can now rejoice because everything has changed once again. There is officially going to be a third movie in the Spider-Man: Homecoming franchise to be co-produced by Marvel and Sony. The wall-crawler is set to return for another MCU outing as well.
Simu Liu has taken to Twitter to express his excitement over Spider-Man’s return. The actor not only posted a GIF of Spidey from the animated series, but also shared the cover of Marvel Team-Up #84. The 1979 story sees Spidey and Shang-Chi attempt to stop a Hydra assassination plot. This is hardly the only time that the webhead and the martial artist have worked together. Shang-Chi has even trained Spider-Man and helped him learn to fight without relying on his Spidey sense.
The MCU losing Spider-Man at this time was particularly heartbreaking for fans, especially with Marvel Studios finally having access to the X-Men and the Fantastic Four thanks to the Disney/Fox deal. After so many years split apart, Marvel was finally poised to have all of its heroes back under one roof. Spidey has always been one of the comic company's most popular and relatable characters. So, the thought of Marvel's plan unfolding without him, particularly after how well-received this iteration of the web-slinger has been, was a sad one. Even Holland appears overjoyed that Spider-Man will remain in the MCU.
Now that Sony and Marvel have reached an agreement, it’s likely that Spider-Man and Shang-Chi will eventually meet onscreen, though it seems likely this would happen within a larger team-up. With so many exciting Marvel projects on the horizon, viewers will be grateful that their Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will be back in action with his fellow heroes.
