Although it might seem as if Spider-Man returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the best news ever, one can find many missed opportunities if they stop to think about it. The MCU has a general formula it uses for its films, and Spider-Man movies fall hard under this method, meaning there’s not much room for further creativity.
This is why it’s a bit of a shame that we won’t have Spider-Man in a separate continuity anymore, as certain possibilities would have seen this new universe beating out what the MCU can offer us. Still, the MCU Spider-Man hasn’t let us down so far, so here are 5 reasons we’re glad he’s back, along with 5 reasons why we’re not so glad.
10 Glad: The Cliffhanger Will Be Resolved
The ending of Spider-Man: Far From Home had the biggest cliffhanger yet in a Spider-Man movie, where the Daily Bugle.net reported that the "hero" Mysterio was killed by Spider-Man, thereby framing Peter and exposing his identity.
There’s a long list of possibilities as to what might be the true case here, since there doesn’t seem like much a story in the making if Peter is in hiding the whole time. There are dozens of theories fans have, but we’re glad that we can know for sure as to how this cliffhanger will be resolved.
9 Not Glad: There Might Be Another Dispute In The Future
Did any of us even consider that there would be a dispute between Disney and Sony before it took place in August? Fans were shattered to hear this sudden bombshell of a news when it broke out, and there’s going to be a constant state of apprehension over whether talks will break down again.
Even though there’s another movie commissioned, we just can’t be secure in the knowledge that Spider-Man is in the MCU. You can bet that as soon as the next movie is released, there’s going to be a lot of rumors floating around over Spider-Man’s future. This is the kind of constant worry fans wouldn’t want to live with.
8 Glad: Spider-Man In Another Avengers Movie
Now that Captain America, Black Widow, and Iron Man are gone, there’s only a couple names (like Thor) who could take the leadership of the Avengers in the next movie, but the most likely candidate might be Spider-Man.
Since he’s the character based on Earth - and more importantly the character who is most established among the current crop of heroes - Avengers 5 could see him lead the faction against whoever the villain turns out to be. His two appearances in the latest Avengers movies were unanimously well received, so another appearance is a win all around.
7 Not Glad: No Crossover With Tom Hardy's Venom
It is definitely a shame that Spider-Man won’t be sharing the screen with Venom, specifically the Venom played by Tom Hardy. Both Tom Holland and Hardy are beloved actors, watching whom in their superhero monikers would’ve been a treat. Venom started out Sony’s Marvel Universe on the right foot, as the film turned out to be an enormous success that almost made as much money on the box office as Spider-Man: Homecoming - there was definitely some potential for a quality crossover here. It would also have been fun to watch Tom’s Spider-Man encounter Venom, considering how easily frightened this version of Peter is.
6 Glad: Tony Stark's Relationship With Peter Is Preserved
How awkward would it have been to see the same version of Spider-Man that was in the MCU, without being able to make any references to what previously happened to him? Up until now, almost all of Peter’s character has been linked to Tony, so it would’ve been weird to see them skirting around this fact.
Besides, after the heartbreaking portrayal of grief by Tom Holland’s Peter over Tony’s death in Avengers: Endgame, the fans wouldn’t have liked seeing this enormous event in the character’s life go completely ignored.
5 Not Glad: Uncle Ben's History Still In Doubt
A major criticism for the MCU’s Spider-Man series has been the total lack of references toward Uncle Ben, who is a beloved character and symbol of goodness for the fans. Tony might have taken this role, but he didn’t have the same character that Uncle Ben did.
More importantly, it’s been over three years since this Peter Parker has been introduced and yet we have no clue what happened to his Uncle Ben. Aunt May has never been seen grieving her husband’s death, nor has it been made clear if Uncle Ben died or not. With Spider-Man continuing in the MCU, it’s most likely we still won’t be finding out about this backstory.
4 Glad: JK Simmons' JJJ In The MCU
The best surprise from Spider-Man: Far From Home was the appearance of JJJ, who was played by everyone’s favorite JK Simmons. This version of the character seems to work alone for the “Daily Bugle.net”, which looks like a website generally considered as the creation of a conspiracy nut.
It’s going to be interesting to see how this Daily Bugle works out, since the possibility of Peter working as a photographer for an internet show with little credibility sounds very different from the traditional Daily Bugle. Whatever happens, at least we’ll have more of JK Simmons’ classic portrayal of the JJJ character.
3 Not Glad: Major Spider-Man Villains Won't Be Seen In MCU (For A While)
The upcoming schedule of MCU films is going to be extremely cluttered, and we’ve seen huge gaps between sequels for franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor. Similarly, Spider-Man will also have to endure these years’ worth of separation.
This means that major villains like Doctor Octopus, Green Goblin, Electro, or perhaps even Venom might not be seen for a long time in the MCU. It’s also likely that Sony simply keeps these villains in is own Marvel Universe, meaning we’ll be left with C-List villains for Spider-Man in the MCU.
2 Glad: We Don't Have To See Yet Another Origin Story
Hardly anyone was excited at the prospect of seeing Peter Parker be introduced as Spider-Man for the fourth time. We had two versions of these within a span of only four years from The Amazing Spider-Man to Captain America: Civil War, so it goes without saying the origin tale wasn’t one fans were crazy about.
Most likely, Spider-Man would have again been rebooted for Sony’s Marvel Universe even if Tom Holland would’ve reprised the role. That would’ve been much too confusing, seeing as we’d have had two versions of Spider-Man from the same actor.
1 Not Glad: No Chance Of Tobey And Andrew Returning
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was a Sony film, and it had the concept of multiple Spider-Men appearing from different dimensions, making for a quality offering that won an Oscar award. With all this goodwill, there was definitely a chance of seeing a live-action version of this. The best scenario could’ve seen Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returning, as all incarnations of Spider-Men we’ve had onscreen would’ve been there for us to witness. If this would have been pulled off by Sony, it would easily have trumped any storyline the MCU could give us. Unfortunately, this is one angle that won’t be coming to life now.
