We also think it's safe to say that the 2000s were the golden age for this genre of film, and all of us have our favorite from this decade. While some rom-coms fill our hearts, some just aren't as great as they're made out to be. If you're looking for your next date night or friends' sleepover flick, look no further. Here are 10 romantic comedies from the 2000s, including 5 that are timeless, and 5 that are way overrated.
10 Overrated: Hitch (2005)
Yeah, we probably all love Will Smith, and sure, we are probably even big fans of Eva Mendes. However, have you actually watched this movie recently? We can say pretty confidently that it doesn't hold up. Will Smith plays a "date doctor", who tries to woo a gossip columnist, but things blow up when she finds out what he does for a living. This movie isn't actually all that funny, and it's pretty misogynistic, to be honest. Yeah, it was good in 2005, but we'd like to leave it there.
9 Underrated: The Proposal (2009)
This rom-com has Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, and we're not sure you need to know any more than that to know that it's absolutely amazing. Bullock plays a boss, who is, well, bossy, and tries to force her assistant to marry her so she won't get sent back to Canada when her visa expires. This movie is honestly hilarious, and has every bit of outrageous and quirky humor you expect from these two. On top of all this, it's as heart-warming as they come. Go watch it right now if you need a bit of a pick-me-up.
8 Overrated: 13 Going on 30 (2004)
Again, we love Jennifer Garner, but this movie doesn't hold up as much as it did in 2004. When a 13-year-old girl makes a wish on her birthday, she wakes up as a thirty-year-old woman. This movie is kind of corny, and we're not loving the whole Freaky-Friday young-to-old thing going on.
It's cute, and it's funny, but it definitely isn't as fantastic as it's made out to be. If you really love Jennifer Garner, maybe you could get through it when you're half asleep on a late night.
7 Underrated: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
We're not sure this movie is exactly underrated, but we do think it deserves more and more credit every single time we watch it. Matthew McConaughey plays Benjamin Barry, an advertising executive who makes a bet that he can get a woman to fall in love with him in 10 days. Kate Hudson plays Andie Anderson, a "How To" writer for a magazine that is writing an article on "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days". Of course, these two meet each other to complete their goals, and the result is absolutely hilarious. These two are brilliant, and you'll probably be crying at the end, too.
6 Overrated: The Wedding Planner (2001)
Matthew McConaughey is in this one, too, and this time he co-stars with Jennifer Lopez. JLo plays a wedding planner, but when she meets Steve Edison, the groom of the wedding she's planning, things get a bit complicated when she starts to fall in love with him.
This movie is cute and quirky, but it's kind of one those "that would suck to be the other woman" kind of films. It's also just super predictable and typical, and just doesn't really hold up as one our favs, so we think it's okay to skip over this one on a ladies' night.
5 Underrated: 500 Days of Summer (2009)
This quirky rom-com follows a young woman who doesn't believe in true love. However, things become a bit tricky when she's faced with a man who is head over heels for her. Starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, this movie is honestly the perfect, wholesome romance and comedy you could ever need. We love both of these actors with our whole hearts, and it goes without saying that their rom-com would be absolutely perfect. Definitely give this one a try, if you haven't already.
4 Overrated: 50 First Dates (2004)
Let's be honest - we know Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore have paired up a lot, but is it ever really the best movie? We're going to go with no, even though they can be kind of humorous and entertaining. When Henry Roth, a man scared of commitment, meets Lucy, he thinks she can maybe change his mind. However, she has short-term memory loss, and forgets him after every date. This movie is quirky, and kind of funny, but we definitely don't want to put it on the same level as all of our other favs.
3 Underrated: Something's Gotta Give (2003)
We rarely get genuine, heartfelt and hilarious stories about older people dating. This movie is a perfect movie about just that. Jack Nicholson plays a senior citizen, with a taste for younger women, who begins to fall for an older, brilliant woman (Diane Keaton).
This movie also has Keanu Reeves, France McDormand, and Jon Favreau. It'll honestly keep you laughing the whole time, all the while filling you with wholesome goodness. This is definitely a timeless must-watch romantic comedy.
2 Overrated: Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)
We think it's time to be honest about this film, and that means admitting that it's not actually that fantastic, especially by today's standards. Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) embarks on a journey of self-improvement in her quest for love, all of which she keeps track of in her diary. Yeah, this movie is quirky and definitely has its funny moments, but it's not exactly the most enthralling or interesting movie we've ever seen. Honestly, we're throwing Bridget under the "overrated" headline. Sorry, gal.
1 Underrated: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
We're not sure why everyone isn't talking about this movie. With Jim Carey and Kate Winslet, this movie follows this couple's relationship after they undergo a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories. This film received a whopping 8.3/10 on IMDb (which is incredible for a rom-com), and is an absolutely hilarious and heartfelt tale about falling in love with your significant other all over again. Also, Carey and Winslet are fantastic, and we can't endorse this film enough. Oh yeah, it also won an Oscar for best Original Screenplay. So, what are you waiting for?
