Apple TV+'s original series The Morning Show has received mixed reviews from critics ahead of its November 1 release date. The series stars Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, and Steve Carell, and draws inspiration from journalist Brian Stelter's book, Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV.
The series follows Mitch Kessler (Carell), the lead anchor of a morning show who is hit by a damning sexual assault allegation. He is promptly fired, forcing his partner, Alex Levy (Aniston) to take over - even as she fights to avoid being fired as well. Witherspoon plays Bradley Jackson, a young journalist itching to take Levy's place as the head newsreader.
So far, critics haven't quite taken to Jay Carson's (and his replacement, Kerry Ehrin's) streamer-launching drama. IndieWire's review says the experience of watching The Morning Show is "a bit like watching The Big Short, except nothing is said straight-to-camera and nearly everything is boring." CNN s take is that "[The Morning Show] isn't bad, just generally unimpressive," while Variety calls it a "politically muddled, underthought, and underwhelming streaming misfire." While some critics skewed more positively towards the show, it doesn't have the rave reviews that Apple was undoubtedly hoping for with one of its launch day originals.
With such a stacked cast lending their talents to The Morning Show, it's surprising that it isn't winning critics over. Great performers usually elevate any movie/television show they star in, even if the story or execution is lacking. But it's important to note that not every review has been negative overall. For the most part, the reviews for The Morning Show have been reasonably balanced.
Rocky start aside, The Morning Show still offers enough entertainment to keep even the most discerning viewers somewhat entertained. And this, of course, isn't the only Apple TV+ show on the horizon. The Hailee Steinfeld-led Dickinson is a hit, and there are sure to be more that will follow (like See). The streaming service's plans to completely dominate in the already-raging streaming wars have officially started, and it will be interesting to see how well it performs against the might of Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and a host of planned releases from other networks.
