Ever since making her big-screen debut in The Princess Diaries back in 2001, Anne Hathaway has become one of the most popular actresses of her generation. Hathaway earned her first Oscar nomination following Jonathan Demme's 2008 film Rachel Getting Married. Four years later, Hathway won her first Academy Award for her work in the musical adaptation of Les Miserables.
On November 22nd, Hathaway returns to the big screen in Todd Haynes' new star-studded legal-thriller Dark Waters. To whet our appetite for her return, let's have a look at Anne Hathway's 10 Best Movies According to IMDB!
10 The Devil Wears Prada (6.9/10)
Going fashionably toe-to-toe with Meryl Streep is no easy feat, but easy is precisely what Hathaway did in the 2006 smash hit The Devil Wears Prada.
Based on the bestselling Laura Weisberger novel, Hathaway plays the wide-eyed Andrea Sachs, a newly graduated journalist looking to make it big in the magazine industry. When she lands a job as a personal assistant to the vicious Miranda Priestly (Streep), an executive for a top-selling fashion magazine, Andy's life is turned upside down. Conforming at first, Andrea learns the importance of being yourself in the end.
9 One Day (7.0/10)
While scoring a middling rating from the critics, IMDB fans fell in love with Hathaway's throwback romantic drama, One Day.
Adapted by Lone Scherfig from the David Nicholls novel, One Day follows the romantic exploits of Emma (Hathaway) and Dexter (Jim Sturgess). Their first encounter occurs on the night of their college graduation, with the rest of the film peeking in on their relationship on the same date every year. The elliptical story shows how a meaningful bond can evolve over time for the better and the worse.
8 Nicholas Nickleby (7.1/10)
In a rare coincidence, Douglas McGrath's Nicholas Nickleby shares the same Metascore and IMDB rating. Meaning, the movie appeals to casual fans and critics alike!
Adapted from the Charles Dickens novel, the story concerns the title character's dogged attempt to rescue his family from his ruthless uncle's cruel behavior. Hathaway plays Madeline Bray in the film, an artist forced to financially support her father after he gambles away his money. When Nickleby meets Bray, a romantic entanglement ensues that complicates matters for all involved.
7 Becoming Jane (7.1/10)
In her first chance to portray a real-life character on screen, Hathaway won audiences over with her titular turn as famed English novelist Jane Austen. Now that's pride and prejudice for you!
Based on letters written by Austen, the Julian Jarrold film recounts the romance of Austen and dashing young Irish suitor, Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy). And aside from the fantastical Ella Enchanted and The Princess Diaries, the movie marks the first time Hathaway earned the chance to play a leading lady in a major motion picture. From Dickens to Hugo to Oscar!
6 The Intern (7.1/10)
Two Oscar-winners come face-to-face in The Intern, pitting Hathaway against the formidable Robert De Niro in a tale of office hijinks. Who's your money on?
In a bit of a role reversal, the movie features uptight company man Ben Whitaker (De Niro), who decides to intern for an upscale fashion website after retirement leaves him bored. Ben's new boss is Jules Ostin (Hathaway), a hip but overworked exec who desperately needs a little R&R. The compromise? Jules hires Ben to be her new intern, but it's the ways that Ben helps Jules in her personal life, outside the office, that proves to be most meaningful.
5 The Cat Returns (7.3/10)
In just the third feature film role of her career, Hathaway landed a coveted lead voice-over job for the one and only studio Ghibli!
Directed by Hiroyuki Morita, The Cat Returns focuses on a 17-year-old girl, who, after saving a street cat from harm, becomes unwittingly engaged to the feline Prince Lune (Andrew Bevis). The prince's father, known as the Cat King (Tim Curry), tries to woo Haru (Hathaway) by gifting her with several items and favors. In the end, Haru must evade the Cat Kingdom and return home safely.
4 Les Miserables (7.6/10)
In just her second career nomination, Hathaway won an Oscar for Best Leading Actress for her turn in the 2012 musical adaptation of Les Miserables. Not so miserable after all, huh?
Directed by Tom Hooper, the classic Victor Hugo tale revolves around Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) and his honorable decision to care for the daughter of a female worker while on the run from relentless police inspector, Javert (Russell Crowe). Hathaway plays Fantine in the film, whose daughter Cosette (Amanda Seyfried) Valjean vows to protect at whatever cost.
3 Brokeback Mountain (7.7/10)
Because of Heath Ledger's tour-de-force turn as Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, it's easy to forget that Hathaway gave a superb supporting performance. Yet, without her and Michelle Williams, the heartbreaking forbidden love story between two cowboys wouldn't resonate so strongly.
Hathaway plays Lureen Newsome in the film, a woman who distracts Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) away from his one true love, Ennis Del Mar. The film won three Oscars, including Best Director for Ang Lee, and Adapted Screenplay for Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana.
2 The Dark Knight Rises (8.4/10)
It's no easy task filling the form-fitting shoes of Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry, but Hathaway did a bang-up job under the direction of Christopher Nolan on The Dark Knight Rises!
Currently ranked #71 on IMDB's Top 250 Movies Ever Made, the popularity of The Dark Knight Rises speaks for itself. For her part though, Hathaway lent a confident air of sexiness to Selina Kyle in a more playful way than previously seen. After, ahem, a bit of a cat-and-bat chase, Kyle eventually agrees to help the Caped Crusader bring down the treacherous Bane (Tom Hardy).
1 Interstellar (8.6/10)
Hathaway's second career collaboration with Christopher Nolan is good enough to nab the gold in the eyes of IMDB voters. Do you agree with their assessment?
Nolan's ambitious sci-fi spectacle Interstellar takes place in the future, when Earth is ravaged by famine brought about by cataclysmic events. The only future for mankind lies in interstellar travel, where a team of astronauts must successfully pull off a radical new experiment. Hathaway plays Brand in the film, a professor who uses data about a wormhole to conceive said experiment. The objective? Populate a new planet with thousands of human embryos!
