Hit sitcom Seinfeld is one of the most celebrated TV shows of all time, and even though it just focused on normal and relatable things that can happen to anyone and at any time, it is still watched and enjoyed today.
Starring Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards as Jerry Seinfeld, George Costanza, Elaine Benes and Cosmo Kramer, respectively, it was on the air from 1989 to 1998. That being said, it had many outfits that screamed 1990s… but it also featured a few ensembles that could still work today, being cool, trendy and acceptable in the year 2019.
10 Totally ‘90s: Jerry’s Sporty Look
One time, while at the gym, Jerry and George met Keith Hernandez in a locker room. Due to this setting, Jerry was wearing a sort of sporty look. There was a basic black tee, a jacket that is giving off some windbreaker-from-the-1990s vibes, a pair of dad jeans, and finally some white tennis shoes.
This isn’t an outfit that is hurting our eyes, but it does look a bit dated, and there are much better ways to freshen up a casual look today.
9 Could Work Today: Jerry’s At-Home Outfit
Jerry dressed in a pretty casual way; unless he was performing on a stage (which will be covered later), he could usually be found in comfy shoes, jeans and basic tops… as seen in this image!
The pants are fine and could work in almost any time period and in any setting. His shoes are more attractive than the sneakers up above. And the long-sleeve shirt is more interesting than a T-shirt. This could easily be seen in 2019.
8 Totally ‘90s: Kramer’s Wild Shirt
When it comes to Kramer, some of his outfits definitely look like they are from that time period, but some of them are just weird since they are his. He is a quirky character, and he wore out-there ensembles at times, such as this shirt.
It is a navy blue color, it has an orange stripe going down the middle and the bottom half of it, and it has a color block pocket. Some people may find this to be cool, but overall, it just looks like something that would have been worn in the ‘90s.
7 Could Work Today: George’s Suit
George was a working man, and some of his scenes showed him at work. That being said, he wore quite a few suits, work jackets, button-down shirts and ties. Some of these appear to be a little dated now, but most of them were good looks that could work in today’s day and age.
Just look at this picture: He is wearing a white shirt under a brown suit jacket, and he looks very put together (though that is probably just an act, as he was usually nervous and awkward!)
6 Totally ‘90s: Denim On Denim
Denim is a staple fabric that has been worn for years and years. It can be worn by anyone, and it can be dressed up or kept casual. In the 1990s, though, there were lots of denim-on-denim looks, as seen here.
Jerry is actually wearing black pants, but he has paired those with a button-down denim shirt. Kramer is wearing a similar shirt and a pair of jeans in a darker wash. And it is just so, so much of this one fabric at one time.
5 Could Work Today: Elaine’s Jacket
As mentioned, denim is certainly still in style and will probably never go anywhere, and the oversized and detailed denim jackets that were big back then are back.
Elaine was often seen in baggy jackets, such as this denim one. The popped collar and the sparkly pin are great touches and are part of why so many people admired this character’s style and why people still copy it today.
4 Totally ‘90s: Elaine’s Baggy Look
Some of Elaine’s outfits are better than others. This is not one of her best. It is certainly a very classic look for her, as she loved to pair big blazers with dresses and skirts. However, if this was going to be worn in 2019, there are some changes that could be made.
Underneath, there may be a bodysuit or at least a top that was more fitted. And the hair would for sure be redone since that style is not cool at all today.
3 Could Work Today: Elaine’s Polished Look
One of Elaine’s more polished ensembles is up next, and it's a good one. She had a lot of staple pieces that never go out of style, such as a white button-down blouse, a black scarf and a neutral-colored winter coat.
Underneath, she looks professional and put together and sophisticated, and the coat is like a cherry on top… The cut, the color and the collar help make it a chic layer that was certainly cozy during the cold months she faced in New York.
2 Totally ‘90s: Jerry’s Tie
As mentioned, Jerry was usually dressed in a simple way, but when he went on stage, he elevated it all; he was and is a stand-up comedian, so during his work time, he usually wore a button-down shirt, a blazer and a tie. And most of those ties should stay in the ‘90s.
Like Kramer, we appreciate that he went for something fun rather than a boring and stuffy look… but this would not look amazing on him today.
1 Could Work Today: Elaine’s Black On Black
Like a great winter coat, a black-on-black ensemble can be timeless and fashionable, too, especially in Manhattan.
It is hard to tell what this character is actually wearing here, but there are black pants (basics that are good to always have on hand), and there is a black blazer (which is such an Elaine piece and which looks good in a dressy way, like here, or even with jeans and a tee, as well.)
Yes, this is another fab one from this fab television show.
