For a long time now, it has been normal for Hollywood to pump out remake after remake of already beloved movies or even give sub-par movies another chance. Whatever the case may be, everyone knows there's sure to be a ton of remakes for all 366 (leap year) days of 2020.
These remakes may be good or bad; either way, people will still buy tickets or stream them at some point or another. Here are 5 movie remakes we're looking forward to in 2020 (& 5 we're not).
10 Not Looking Forward To: The Secret Garden
This movie is an adaption we're not looking forward to. The Secret Garden is based on a book of the same name and stars Dixie Egerickx as Mary Lennox, Colin Firth as Archibald Craven, Isis Davis as Martha, Maeve Dermody as Alice, Edan Hayhurst as Colin, Amir Wilson as Dickon, and Julie Walters as Mrs. Medlock. The Secret Garden will be coming out on April 17, 2020.
This book has already been adapted in multiples mediums, including multiple movies, TV shows, and even a theater show. What else do the people need out of this book? While it is a good book, it's just not needed. Especially after all the other movies and TV shows.
9 Looking Forward To: Dolittle
Who doesn't love a person who can talk to animals? Dolittle is coming back into everyone's lives on January 17, 2020, and will star Robert Downey Jr. as Dr. Doolittle, Harry Collett as Tommy Stubbins, and Antonio Banderas as Rassoulim. This movie is going to be a wild ride.
One of the most exciting aspects of this movie will be seeing Robert Downey Jr.'s in his first major role after Iron Man. It will also be interesting to see what he brings to the character that Eddie Murphy didn't and what aspects of Tony Stark may remain.
8 Not Looking Forward To: Emma
This movie is an adaption of Jane Austin's Emma. Anya Taylor-Joy will be playing Emma Woodhouse while Johnny Flynn will portray George Knightley. This period dramedy will be coming to theaters on February 21, 2020.
With 8 different TV series and 3 other movies, Emma has been way overdone. With all the different versions of Emma, it's hard to imagine bringing anything new to it. Sometimes, things need to just be left alone and be happy with what's already out there.
7 Looking Forward To: The Witches
The Witches will be swooping into theaters on October 9, 2020, the scariest time of the year. This movie is going to be a dark fantasy comedy that will scare and make you laugh at the same time. Anne Hathaway will be playing Miss Eva Ernst/Grand High Witch alongside Chris Rock, Octavia Spencer, and many more.
The last adaption of this movie was all the way back in the 1990s. It was also marketed as a fantasy dark comedy, so expect a lot of similar tones and feelings while watching this witchy tale.
6 Not Looking Forward To: Gretel & Hansel
Gretel and Hansel is a take on the ever-so iconic story of Hansel and Gretel, a Grim fairy tale from 1812, so it's likely everyone has heard this story in one way or another. This movie is going to star Sophia Lillis as Gretel and Sam Leakey as Hansel. Gretel and Hansel will be hitting theaters on January 31, 2020.
This tale has seen many different interpretations, especially horror. So it definitely fits into the upcoming movie's genre; however, another one is just not needed.
5 Looking Forward To: The Grudge
The next movie on this list can be seen just after the start of the new year on January 3, 2020. Some of the potential victims in The Grudge are John Cho as Peter Spence, Andrea Riseborough as Detective Muldoon, and Jacki Weaver as Lorna Moody.
Word has it that this movie is truly terrifying. It will be interesting to see a modern twist on this 2004 classic. With so many other horror movies coming out in 2020, this movie is sure to begin the year in a frightful way.
4 Not Looking Forward To: Fantasy Island
At least some movies are expected to be remade, but Fantasy Island is really out there. Some of the guests on this island will be Michael Peña as Mr. Roarke, Maggie Q as Elena, Michael Rooker as Morgan, and Lucy Hale as Melanie.
ABC's Fantasy Island was an American TV show of 7 seasons in 1977. This fantasy drama is now being turned into a horror movie, which will appeal to a completely different audience than the original. It will be interesting to see how it turns out and if this movie blows people away or make them return to the original from the '70s.
3 Looking Forward To: Godzilla Vs. Kong
This movie has been a long time coming. Ever since Godzilla and King Kong had their own individual movies this past decade, people have been dying to see them face off. Godzilla Vs. Kong will star Millie Bobby Brown as Madison Russell and Alexander Skarsgård, playing a friend of King. This movie hits theaters on November 20, 2020.
Godzilla and King Kong have not faced off since 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla, so people are hoping for an epic clash in this movie. Who will you side with, Godzilla or King Kong?
2 Not Looking Forward To: Black Beauty
This movie does not have a release date yet, but it's assumed to hit theaters in 2020. It will star Mackenzie Foy as Jo Gree and Kate Winslet as the voice of Black Beauty.
This will be Black Beauty's 10th movie adaption (yes, that's correct). While remakes tend to have at least one redeeming quality or something to help the audience understand why it was remade in the first place, some movies leave viewers wondering why they keep trying.
There is beauty in older movies and people can still enjoy them, but Hollywood needs to understand that not everything requires a face-lift to still be enjoyed.
1 Looking Forward To: Dune
The movie adaption we are most looking forward to is Dune. Dune is expecting great traction as it has a magnificent star-studded cast with Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, and Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, just to name a few. This epic movie will be coming to IMAX on December 18, 2020.
This movie has been expecting a remake since 2009, but as with most many productions, there were compilations. People have not seen an adaption of this book since the mini-series in 2000. If all goes well, this movie will be the first of a two-part adaptation. It will be exciting to get a new generation interested in the sci-fi sensation that dominated the '80, and Dune is the perfect way to do it.
