Daisy Ridley says she was so overwhelmed by Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker that she wanted to cry. The ninth and final installment (for now) in the Star Wars saga has finally arrived, and reactions to the highly anticipated film have thus far been rather mixed. Indeed, after early screenings for critics, the film currently carries a rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes, and in fact is ranked lower than the much maligned Attack of the Clones.
Despite critics largely not being on board with Rise of Skywalker, the film is still expected to storm to a huge opening over the coming weekend. Leading up to the film’s release, writer-director J.J. Abrams and company have done a good job keeping spoilers under wraps, guaranteeing that audiences have plenty of surprises in store when they buy their tickets to experience what is indeed being billed as the final chapter in the saga, which of course began with 1977’s original Star Wars. Many classic Star Wars characters are back for the final bow, including Emperor Palpatine and Lando Calrissian, while the story arcs of newer favorites Rey, Poe Dameron, Finn and Kylo Ren come their conclusions after being kicked off in 2015’s The Force Awakens.
Indeed, shooting the final Star Wars sequel trilogy film proved to be an emotional experience for everyone involved, and seeing the finished product too was overwhelming to some of the actors. Speaking to ET, Ridley revealed that she was so moved by Rise of Skywalker that she tried to sneak off after the premiere and let her emotions out in private. The actress said:
"We all sort of sat around a bit stunned. And then I was trying to scurry off into the car to cry and [producer] Michelle Rejwan and [screenwriter] Chris Terrio were like, 'No, go on.' I was like, 'I don't want to cry in front of you! I just want to get in the car.'"
Ridley said that overall the movie is such a fast paced experience, it didn’t let her really deal with her emotions until it was all over:
"It's, like, super snappy. So you're sort of so tuned in that we really didn't process it until the end. Then suddenly, you're like, 'Oh… oh my gosh,' … it's very overwhelming."
It’s no surprise of course that Ridley would be so emotional after the experience of seeing Rise of Skywalker, given that she’s devoted the better part of the last five years of her life to playing Rey, the orphaned Jakku scavenger who escaped the desolation of that planet only to discover her Force powers and become a member of the Resistance in their battle against Kylo Ren and the First Order. There’s no question that playing Rey catapulted Ridley to a level of stardom that she would not have achieved without Star Wars, and now that she’s seemingly leaving the character behind, it’s understandable that she would have strong feelings.
Of course, it remains to be seen if in fact Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will mark the last appearance for Rey in the franchise. Disney and Lucasfilm’s future plans for Star Wars remain very vague (and indeed sometimes it seems they may not have a solid plan in place), but it’s been indicated that some Star Wars sequel trilogy characters could still appear in later movies. Given her central role in the last three movies, it would not be a surprise to see Disney attempt to bring Rey back at some point in the future, though it is of course up to Ridley herself to decide if she wishes to pick up Rey’s lightsaber again or prefers to leave Star Wars in her past. Either way, she did a fine job bringing Rey to life over the course of the last three movies.
