The 10 Best Movies Made By The Asylum, According To IMDb

In the last few weeks, you might have been watching Christmas movies and now you are probably watching some New Year movies, but you just have to consider some other options that might seem absolutely absurd at first.

The Asylum is known for making terrible blockbuster rip-offs (including some knock-off superhero flicks), but even this studio has some good movies. Here are The 10 Best Movies Made By The Asylum, According To IMDb.

10 Drylongso (1998) - 6.9

Though it was technically made by a different company (like many of the films on this list), Drylongso was distributed by The Asylum so it counts. The word itself comes from an old African word which means "ordinary", but the coming-of-age story within the film is not ordinary at all.

The main character Pica is an art student who starts photographing young African-American men in a dysfunctional household in Oakland, California. She suddenly realizes that the same men she photographed become the victims of a local serial killer.

9 Christmas Belles (2019) - 6.9

If you know Cuba Gooding Jr., you might know his brother Omar Gooding who is one of the main stars of this recent Christmas TV movie. It might not be the most outstanding picture, but it is decent enough for you to enjoy once or twice.

The story focuses on two successful thirty-year-old best friends who are still unhappy to an extent despite their achievements at work. When a new handsome pastor appears, they both try to win him over, but their attempts are hilariously unsuccessful.

8 Snapped (1998) - 7.2

Unfortunately, there is not much to say about Snapped because you can hardly find any information about it online. Perhaps, this is due to the release date being 1998 and the film mostly being shown on festivals. Nevertheless, you can still learn the synopsis on IMDb.

The story is set in a small Long Island town where a group of young people tries to connect with each other. The three main characters find themselves in a David Lynch-like setting, so every fan of the director might find this film quite atmospheric.

7 The Woman Chaser (1999) - 7.2

Based on the novel of the same name, The Woman Chaser played on various film festivals from Sundance to New York Film Festival. Then, in 2015, it even got a re-release as a redux version with an original score replacing half of the music.

The film is set in 1950s Los Angeles and focuses on Richard Hudson who is a car dealer that moves to the city from San Francisco. He sets up a used-car dealership, but quickly gets sick of it and starts writing his first movie screenplay.

6 The Road to Flin Flon (2000) - 7.2

The Road to Flin Flon is another movie that doesn't have that much information about it online. This roadshow movie is not the most innovative one, but it is still very fun to watch if you like comedies.

The main character is Joe Kasko who is a dejected musician from Los Angeles. He decides to move to Flin Flon, Canada to start doing social work with the indigenous people, but an unexpected event in his life makes him reevaluate his priorities and views.

5 Vinyl (2000) - 7.3

This movie is different from others on the list because it is a non-fiction work. Vinyl is a 2000 documentary film by Alan Zweig about collecting records and the people collecting these records. Most of the duration of the movie is made in stylized self-filmed "confessions" of Zweig himself.

Zweig focuses on the process of collecting records and tries to explore why someone would want to collect records rather than dedicating the film to the records collected by the people he features in his work.

4 Joe & Joe (1996) - 7.4

Though there is not much information about it online, Joe & Joe did get successful to some extent. In fact, the film was in the official selection of the Sundance Film Festival and won awards at some other film festivals.

The story tells of two friends each named Joe who mow lawns for a living. Unfortunately, their equipment is quite old and doesn't work well. Unexpectedly, a mysterious woman tells them of a hidden treasure that could easily buy them new equipment.

3 Dot (2002) - 7.4

If you are a fan of mockumentaries, then Dot might be the movie for you. This comedy is very similar to the real-life documentary Startup.com released only a year before Dot, so you could say that this movie is kind of a rip-off.

The story focuses on the nine months in the life of an Internet startup company Zectek.com with its day-to-day ups, downs, and dramas. You could say that it is a social satire and a sly comedy of manners.

2 Next Time (1998) - 7.5

You might know Christian Campbell, the star of Next Time, because he later appeared in the acclaimed crime TV show True Detective as one of the supporting characters. Nevertheless, the movie is also notable for its plot.

Next Time tells the story of an interracial romance between two people meeting at the local laundromat in Los Angeles every Saturday night. One of them is a young African-American artist trying to make a living while the other one is a middle-aged woman caring for her children and grandchildren.

1 The Twisted Nanny (2019) - 7.7

Like Christmas Belles, The Twisted Nanny is also a very recent TV movie that deserves your attention. It is an unpretentious thriller whose title pretty much speaks for itself and doesn't need much description. The cast is not well-known, but the performances are quite decent.

The movie tells the story of Julia who is a single mother who hires a night nanny for her children. However, she soon realizes that nanny Olivia  is trying to turn Julia's kids against her. Julia must now fight and prove that Olivia is not the person she is pretending to be, and the situation is made even worse by the fact that Julia is currently in the process of getting custody of her kids.
