Halo: Combat Evolved PC Beta Testing Begins Next Month

Ever since Halo: Combat Evolved first debuted as an original Xbox launch title, players have been captivated with the series. Now, Halo developer 343 Industries has announced that PC beta testing will finally begin for the remastered version of Combat Evolved in February.

Halo was originally created by Bungie and published by Microsoft. Since then, it has spawned numerous sequels and spin-offs, one of which is the best-selling Xbox One game to date by a wide margin. Bungie continued making Halo games until 2010 when 343 Industries eventually took over. Many of its titles have arguably been more successful than Bungie's, which could mean interesting things for the remaster of Halo: Combat Evolved. This will give a new generation the opportunity to play the game that started it all - with updated 4k UHD graphics and improvements which, hopefully, will make the game feel more modern.

On its official forums, 343 Industries invited players to take part in the upcoming beta test (or "flight" as the developer calls it) for Halo: Combat Evolved, Windows Central reports. The game is in private testing at the moment, but the public "flight" is expected to begin next month. The post invites those in the Halo Insider program to take part in the beta test, which will focus on "validating dedicated servers, peer-to-peer connections, crossplay between Steam and Windows version, new UI for customization in H:CE, and the next season’s progression for H:CE." The beta test will focus on the game's campaign missions, including both single-player and co-op, as well as multiplayer, customization, and progression. It's unclear if any new weapons or items will be added to the game at this point.

People who want to participate should update their Halo Insider profile with a verified email, opt-in for 343 to contact them, and update their profile with the latest DXDIAG. No registration specifically for this "flight" is required. The post also says that 343 Industries will be testing Halo: Reach features, including new crouch behavior which will allow players to move while crouched. This feature is small, but it is something Halo: Reach fans will likely be excited about getting added into the game.

Players who have been itching to dive back into the first Halo will finally get their wish. A release date is currently unknown, but the post seems to indicate that Halo: CE Anniversary will release sometime later this year. The remaster will be a part of the Master Chief Collection, so when it releases, players should know they will have to own that collection in order to play Halo: Combat Evolved once again
