It’s been 18 years since we last caught up with Jean-Luc Picard. In that time we’ve gotten new movies in a new timeline and prequel series like Enterprise and Discovery. Picard, which premieres on CBS All Access Jan. 23, features the retired admiral helping a mysterious girl, as he struggles with the loss of Data and the planet Romulus.
Since our last time on the bridge of the Enterprise we’ve been wondering about a few things, so these are 10 questions we need Picard to answer about the Trek universe. We understand there is an extended universe of novels, comics, and games, but these questions are about the films and TV series.
10 WHO TOOK OVER THE ENTERPRISE WHEN PICARD WAS PROMOTED?
Though the series begins with Picard retired from Starfleet, we do know that he was an admiral when he left. This has us wondering about who stepped up and became captain of the Federation’s flagship vessel.
The obvious choice would be Riker. At the end of Nemesis, he was headed off to captain the U.S.S. Titan. We saw an alternate timeline Geordi become a captain on Voyager and Worf was also a possible candidate. We kind of hope it was Geordi, so we get to see Levar Burton in the captain’s chair.
9 IS IT CONNECTED TO DISCOVERY IN ANY WAY?
Yes, Discovery takes place during the period of The Original Series, but if there’s one thing we know about Star Trek, it’s that the franchise loves to play fast and loose with time travel. Not to mention, season two ended with the ship traveling over 900 years into a bleak future. Did the mysterious adventure Jean-Luc goes on, affect those events?
This is probably a long shot, but we can envision a world where CBS decides to connect Discovery and Picard. Nothing would generate more buzz than an unexpected crossover between the two shows.
8 WHAT IS THE STATE OF THE ROMULAN PEOPLE?
Though Patrick Stewart and the producers have been keeping things very close to the vest, one of the plots we do know involves Jean-Luc’s guilt over the repercussions of Romulus’ destruction.
Following that tragedy from 2009’s Star Trek, what happened to the rest of the Romulans around the universe? Did they settle on a new planet? Did they join the Federation? Perhaps they blamed Starfleet and went to war? Since it’s set to be a central story, it’s one question we know will be answered.
7 IS THERE STILL AN ENTERPRISE?
Before we find out who the new captain of the Enterprise is, we need to know if there still is an Enterprise. Though we don’t know if we’ll find out for sure, we can’t imagine the Trek universe without its most famous ship.
We’ve been told Picard takes place 20 years after Nemesis, which featured the Enterprise-E. Considering how much action it gets involved in and technological advancements, there absolutely could be an Enterprise-F out there somewhere. It’s just a matter of whether or not we get to see it.
6 DID SEVEN OF NINE AND CHAKOTAY GET MARRIED?
Fans were very excited to see Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine in the first trailer. Later previews showed her as someone who helps those who need it. When we last saw Seven, she and the Voyager crew finally made it home. In the process, Admiral Janeway from the future told her that she and Chakotay would get married.
Now that we know Seven will be involved with Jean-Luc in some way, we can’t wait to hear how her relationship with Chakotay went. Did they get married, or did things fizzle out once they had to deal with the real world of living on Earth?
5 ARE THE BORG STILL A MAJOR THREAT?
Considering Jean-Luc’s history with the Borg, and the appearance of both Seven of Nine and Jonathan Del Arco as Hugh, it’s a safe bet that the scary cyborgs will play an important role in the story. However, are the Borg still the galaxy’s most feared threat?
When Admiral Janeway went back in time to help Voyager, she brought future tech to battle the Borg. The plan culminated with the ship destroying the trans warp network, several Borg cubes, and their queen. We assume there were still very dangerous hives in the universe, but with future knowledge and tech, was the Federation able to defeat them?
4 WILL WE VISIT THE MIRROR UNIVERSE?
One of the best plots to come out of Discovery was the extended trip to the Mirror Universe. The alternate world of the Terran Empire is always fascinating to visit. Perhaps the Next Generation’s only major flaw is that we never got to see a goatee wearing, evil Jean-Luc. Here’s hoping Picard finally remedies that.
Patrick Stewart signed onto Picard because he was promised a new, interesting story. The most different take on such a moral, upstanding character would be to show the evilest version of him. Plus, Stewart would be so great, tearing up the screen as a villainous Jean-Luc.
3 WILL GUINAN APPEAR?
Though our captain has had many close friends through the years, his one true confidante has always been Guinan. We have to think that he wouldn’t embark on a mission this important and mysterious without advice from the person he trusts most.
Between hosting The View and appearing in the remake of The Stand, Whoopi Goldberg is just as busy as always. However, she’s dropped hints in several interviews that she’s open to returning to the Trek universe. The stoic captain’s most introspective and emotional moments always came during his talks with Guinan.
2 WHERE DID THE REST OF THE NEXT GENERATION CREW END UP?
It’s no secret that Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, and Brent Spiner will all be reprising their roles as The Next Generation’s Riker, Troi, and Data, so all that’s left is to give us updates on the rest of the crew. We’re desperate to know if Geordi is finally captaining his own ship, or if Worf returned to help lead the Klingon Empire?
We know there will be surprises along the way, and just hope some of them will feature the captain’s former crew. If he’s in a situation where he doesn’t know who to trust, it stands to reason these are the people he would turn to.
1 WHAT HAPPENED AFTER VOYAGER MADE IT HOME?
Whether Jeri Ryan has a substantial role or just a one-episode cameo, Seven of Nine’s appearance opens up a whole can of questions about Voyager. The series ended with the crew finally making it home. Though their stories have been included in books and comics, we haven’t seen the crew on screen since the finale.
Once they got home, did they all go their separate ways, or did they continue exploring the Alpha Quadrant together? We understand the show is about Jean-Luc Picard, but we’ve been waiting 19 years to see the Voyager crew again, so we really want a few of Seven’s friends to show up.
