The Oscar race is heating up with many thinking that the Best Picture prize could go to the unforgettable South Korean thriller, Parasite. The film goes from acclaimed filmmaker Bong Joon-ho and tells the story of a family who goes to great lengths to achieve a better life.
The family at the center of the story are among some of the most memorable and unethical families ever seen in movies. There is something so fascinating about dysfunctional families that seem to make each other worse by being related. Though we are often shocked by their behavior, they are still exciting to watch. Here are the worst movie families of all time, ranked.
10 The McDunnoughs (Raising Arizona)
H.I. McDunnough and his wife Ed meet while she is working as a police officer and he is arrested as a repeat offender. Perhaps this was an early indication that they would form an unconventional family.
The mismatched pair are clearly in love but unfortunately, they are unable to have children. In order to start their dream family, they decide to steal one from a wealthy family who has just had quintuplets. They are loving parents, but it's hard to root for parents who seem to think kidnapping is a forgivable offense.
9 The McCallisters (Home Alone)
The holidays can be very busy especially with a lot of family members around. But you would have to be pretty clueless to forget one of your own kids. The McCallisters were not an ideal family before their unfortunate vacation mishap. The older brother Buzz was a cruel jerk and the uncle Frank was an insensitive cheapskate. But it is Mr. and Mrs. McCallister who deserve most of the blame.
Not only did they forget their young son alone at home while they flew to Paris, but they did it again the next year. At what point should child services be showing up at the McCallisters' door?
8 The Hoovers (Little Miss Sunshine)
Family road trips can be a lot of fun, but they can also be pretty torturous given the family you're traveling with. When it comes to the Hoovers, they embark on a road trip for a noble reason, to bring their young daughter to a beauty pageant. However, the oddball collection of people crammed into a van together proves to be a bad idea.
The father is an arrogant and unsuccessful motivational speaker, the grandfather is a heroin addict, the young son has taken a vow of silence and the uncle has recently tried to kill himself. Together, they take turns getting on each other's nerves and making this a road trip from hell.
7 The Tenenbaums (The Royal Tenenbaums)
The Tenenbaums are noted to be a family of geniuses who have all excelled at things like sports, creative arts, and business. However, that was when they were young and, unfortunately, they grew up to be deeply troubled adults.
A lot of the family's problems could be blamed on Royal Tenenbaum, the patriarch of the family. He stole from his kids, insulted their work and faked a terminal illness. The other family members are far from perfect with one of the sons falling in love with his adoptive sister and another becoming overly protective of his own children.
6 The Hansons (Before The Devil Knows You're Dead)
Financial issues can put a real strain on a family, however, in the case of the Hansons in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, their issues appear to be far deeper than that. The two sons (Ethan Hawke and Phillip Seymour Hoffman) are in a financial bind and decide to rob their own parents' jewelry store which turns deadly.
Aside from this heinous crime, Hawke's character is having an affair with his brother's wife while Hoffman is a drug addict who embezzled money from his company. This family proves that being related doesn't mean you can do terrible things to each other.
5 Thrombeys (Knives Out)
Like the Tenenbaums, the Thrombeys are a family who has seen great success, however, that is mostly due to Harlan Thrombey's profitable career as a mystery novelist. When Harlan dies during a family gathering, most of the family stands to benefit from his death and everyone becomes a suspect.
However, even though only one person can be guilty of that crime, it's clear the Thrombeys are not as charming a family as they pretend to be. They pretend to care for others only until their own power is threatened, then their true nature comes out. They are a group of spoiled children all crying for more.
4 The Corleones (The Godfather Trilogy)
Family-run businesses can be quite charming, but when that business is organized crime, the charm quickly wears off. Despite the illegal things the Corleones are involved in, there does seem to be a lot of love, especially from the patriarch Don Vito Corleone.
However, the family dynamics change once Vito is shot and unable to oversee the family anymore. Michael Corleone steps in and proves to be even more ruthless. What follows is distrust, betrayal, and murder which are not great signs of a loving family.
3 The Kims (Parasite)
It's always nice when family members all work together to help the entire group succeed, but that can sometimes go too far as we see with the Kims in Parasite. The Kims are a struggling family in Korea working to make ends meet. When an opportunity for one arises, the whole family is given the chance to change their lives for the better.
Though we are initially rooting for the Kims to improve their lives, we see that they are willing to step over others to get a little bit higher on the social ladder. While not evil people, their immoral decisions prove to have horrific consequences.
2 The Sawyers (Texas Chainsaw Massacre)
Every family has its own eccentricities that might look strange to outsiders but are normal to them. For the Sawyers, those eccentricities happen to be murder and cannibalism. This close-knit Texan family spends their time luring passersby to their estate where they are chased and terrorized by Leatherface, the deranged, chainsaw-wielding member of the family.
The family seems to think there is nothing wrong with their behavior or the fact that one of them wears a mask made out of human skin. Thankfully, the rest of us know that behavior is unacceptable.
1 The Skywalkers (Star Wars Saga)
When Star Wars first came out, the name Skywalker was associated with heroics and good. Now the family name comes with a lot more baggage. Starting with Anakin Skywalker, he was a promising Jedi who turned to the Dark Side, killed countless people and became Darth Vader.
Luke Skywalker at least resisted the Dark Side but he has plenty of issues to. He kissed his sister one two separate occasions in a non-brotherly way, plus he thought about killing his nephew. Speaking of his nephew Ben, he decided to follow Anakin's footsteps turning to the Dark Side and killing his own father.
