The Matrix 4's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Begins Training

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, one of the stars of the upcoming as-of-yet unnamed film The Matrix 4, has begun training for his role. Reportedly cast as a younger version of Morpheus from the previous trilogy, Abdul-Mateen is also known for his work in the DC Aquaman film as the villain Black Manta, as well as his roles as Cal Abar in the recent popular television adaptation of The Watchmen and Russel Thomas in Jordan Peele's Us.

Although Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is presumably playing a younger version of Laurence Fishburne, the latter has not yet spoken out about any sort of involvement with the film, even as fellow original Matrix trilogy co-stars like Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss have signed on. Little is known about the plot of The Matrix 4 at this point, although the final entry in the original saga left the series with a plethora of options for moving forward.

Even though details are currently sparse, that hasn't stopped people who are publicly involved with the project from voicing their excitement, and Abdul-Mateen is no different. Recently, the actor posted a video to his Instagram page showing him getting in shape for his role in the upcoming Matrix movie and captioning it with the phrase "Back at it. Matrix mode WOAH!" Take a look at the video below:

This isn't the first time Abdul-Mateen has posted videos and images of himself working out to Instagram, but it is funny how the video captioned "Matrix Mode" features shots of him exercising while the camera rotates around in a half-circle, oddly reminiscent of how the breakthrough action scenes were choreographed and shot in the original Matrix movie. Whether this was an intentional homage on the part of the camera operator, or simply a happy coincidence, is unknown. However, judging from the amount of effort and determination Abdul-Mateen is displaying above, he's clearly taking the role seriously.

The first Matrix film was an instant hit among critics and audiences alike, and although the following sequels were not as well received the franchise still holds a special place in many viewers minds. Although the plot of The Matrix saga can be somewhat convoluted at times, multiple hints have been dropped throughout the films which suggest the entire first three entries had both happened before in The Matrix universe and would happen again, so perhaps this new iteration will see Keanu Reeves' character Neo trying to convince a younger version of Morpheus to try and do things differently than before. Until more plot details about The Matrix 4 are released, however, all fans can do is enjoy Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's workout music videos and lament about The Matrix Online being shut down.
