Three characters from the original Top Gun movie are returning the long-awaited sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Over 30 years after the first movie, a second Top Gun film is finally happening, with Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski at the helm.
A Top Gun sequel has been in development for ten years now. Christoper McQuarrie, who has worked with Top Gun star Tom Cruise on a long list of movies, was hired to pen the script. The project hit a few snags but eventually moved forward, with it being decided that the new Top Gun movie would be a proper sequel with Cruise once again in the lead role. The realistic dogfights and flying sequences that made Top Gun so popular will continue to be prominent in Top Gun 2. Also, Kenny Loggins is expected to record a new version of "Danger Zone", the iconic song from the first film.
Since Top Gun released all the way back in 1986, it's no surprise that Top Gun 2 boasts a mostly new cast. So that means some people - like Kelly McGillis, who played Charlie in Top Gun - didn't receive offers to return. It would seem that Jennifer Connelly has replaced McGillis as the main character's love interest. Age could also explain why other cast members aren't returning, since many of the characters would have retired prior to the setting of the film. Here are all the characters returning for Top Gun: Maverick.
Fresh off of his role in his highest-grossing film yet, Mission Impossible: Fallout, Tom Cruise is back in the cockpit as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick. Despite how much time has passed, Maverick is still flying, thanks to his efforts to avoid a promotion that would have seen him permanently grounded. In the sequel, Maverick's job is to train a new groups of pilots for a dangerous mission.
In Top Gun, Carole Bradshaw (Meg Ryan) was the wife of Goose (Anthony Edwards), Maverick's best friend and co-pilot. Goose died by the end of the movie. Carole is back for Maverick, but will be played by Jean Louisa Kelly instead. Her presence in the movie is likely explained by Miles Teller's character, Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, who is Carole's son.
Val Kilmer's Tom "Iceman" Kazansky was a cocky pilot who developed a highly competitive relationship with Maverick. Other than Cruise, Kilmer is the only confirmed Top Gun cast member appearing in Maverick. It's been said that Iceman is now an admiral, but for some reason, his character is missing from the trailers, which adds mystery to his role in the story. Some are speculating that he died, and that Iceman's funeral is the one depicted in the trailer. If so, the death of a key Top Gun character may be what kicks off the movie.
