Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is getting his own TV show about his childhood, as Young Rock has been ordered to series. Known as one of the hardest working and busiest people in entertainment, Johnson has become one of the biggest stars on Earth. From Johnson's days as a WWE superstar, The Rock has since transitioned to becoming an actor - and one of the most popular ones around in recent years.
Johnson's career really started to take off in 2011 when he helped give the Fast & Furious franchise a jolt of energy. Since that time, he appeared in three more entries of the main franchise and recently was given his own spin-off movie, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. Outside of this franchise, he's tackled blockbuster after blockbuster, most of which wind up being massive box office hits thanks to his incredibly large fanbase. Johnson's work ethic has also seen him become more of a producer, expanding his reach any way he can. With so much of his current life and past as a wrestler well-documented, Johnson is now turning his childhood into a TV series.
NBC announced at the Television Critics Association (via TV Line) that they've ordered Young Rock straight to series. The sitcom of Johnson's younger life will be about his tumultuous childhood. The first season will consist of eleven episodes, all of which Johnson will executive produce and appear in as a cast member. NBC, who already works with Johnson on his game show Titans Game, revealed he “will appear in each episode as the focus and inspiration of the series will be about his formative years.” The pilot is co-written by Fresh Off the Boat's Nahnatchka Khan and Jeff Chiang, who will also serve as EPs alongside Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Brian Gewirtz, and Jennifer Carreras.
The exact time in Johnson's life that Young Rock will explore is not specified, but his years leading up to his professional football and wrestling careers are presumably in play, with the show likely ignoring his upcoming role as DC's Black Adam altogether. Johnson was born in California, but lived in New Zealand for a time as a kid, as well as North Carolina, Connecticut, Hawaii, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania. This should give Young Rock plenty of opportunities for travel. This was also a period in Johnson's life where he had multiple run-ins with the law and was arrested for fighting, theft, and check fraud before he was 17.
All of this should give Young Rock plenty of stories to tell, and there are surely many others Johnson can shed light on as well. The comedic tone and Johnson's direct involvement should make for an entertaining sitcom that will also profile one of the most popular actors around. However, the entire concept of Young Rock also means that one actor - if not more - will have to play a younger version of Johnson, which will be no easy task. Maybe viewers will even get to see an entire episode with Johnson's iconic black turtleneck look. No release date is set at this time, but fans of Johnson could see Young Rock as soon as this fall or sometime in 2021.
