Every great sitcom tends to have a 'hub' where the characters will spend the majority of their time on the show, and for Friends, that location was Central Perk. The coffee shop played host to many a classic moment, from Ross and Rachel's iconic kiss all the way to Phoebe blaring out "Smelly Cat."
The gang always had their sofa and chair situation sorted, with the giant-sized mugs and a red-hot coffee ready to drink. No matter what time of day it was, the group could seemingly always be found here, with this being their number one spot. But because so much of the show takes place inside this location, it has left fans with a ton of unanswered questions about the legendary coffee location, and here are ten of them.
10 Why Is Terry Never Around?
A lot of Friends fans are under the impression that Gunther actually owns Central Perk, but that isn't actually the case. While he certainly puts in a lot of hours at the coffee shop, it is actually Terry who owns it, and he does make two appearances in the show.
He comes in and ridicules Rachel for not being good at her job, and also makes it clear he's not fond of Phoebe's singing. You would think considering that Terry doesn't seem to like anything he sees that he would be around more often, but he never actually seems to be there.
9 Why Coffee?
One of the biggest unanswered questions about Friends is why they spend so much time in a coffee shop. It doesn't matter if it's first thing in the day or last thing at night if they're not in their apartments the chances are they will be hanging out here.
For a group of people who are young, and single for large portions of the show, you would think they'd be hanging out at bars and clubs. While we occasionally see them frequent that sort of environment, it is very rare, which is certainly odd for people at the stage they're at in life.
8 Who Picked The Art Work?
Something that fans of Friends begun to pick up throughout the show was that the background art on the walls changes quite frequently throughout the show. It kept things fresh throughout the show and certainly gave audiences things to look out for, but the big question is why?
It's never explained if the shop actually sells those art pieces, and therefore that's why they change or if Gunther simply has an amazing eye for art and likes putting as much up as possible.
7 Why Don't They Work?
The actual timing of things that happen on Friends is quite confusing at times, which is never more clear than when the fact they're always at Central Perk. While it makes sense that they can go and relax on an evening, or perhaps even grab a quick drink for the morning, how do they manage to go during the day?
It seems like none of them is ever working as there's always at least a few of the main group inside Central Perk during the daytime. Sure, some episodes could be a weekend, but they're often not, so they clearly have some very relaxed work schedules.
6 The Chandler/Rachel Mystery
While this isn't about Central Perk specifically, the venue does play host to one of Friends' biggest unanswered questions, which is why Rachel doesn't remember Chandler. While a lot of years pass between their first meeting and when Rachel storms into Central Perk on her wedding day in the first episode, it doesn't make sense that she doesn't remember him.
She meets Chandler for the first time several times on the show. They actually spend Thanksgiving together at the Geller household in one episode, and then he even hits on her at one point when Central Perk was a bar. Yet for some reason, they have no recollection of that past.
5 Joey & Rachel Working
During the history of Friends, both Rachel and Joey have spent time working for Central Perk as waiters. Neither of them are very good at the job, in fact, they're both quite terrible, and they don't have experience which makes you wonder how they got hired in the first place.
It's an even bigger question mark over how neither got fired at any point. Both Rachel and Joey end up quitting their roles, and while Gunther admits he was set to fire Joey (he would never fire Rachel), both of them somehow escape this time without being fired.
4 What Is Gunther's Second Name?
Considering he is such a big part of the show, Gunther still remains quite a big mystery on the show. While we get nuggets of information throughout the series about him, like the fact he can speak fluently in Dutch, we never learn too many of the basics.
One big fact that we never actually learn is what his second name actually is. While it might not be the most important piece of information, it would have been nice to know what his second name was at some stage in the series.
3 What's The Deal With The Potato?
When you head to your local coffee shop, whether that be a Starbucks or an independent brand, you can always expect food to be on sale. Most of the time, that comes in the form of pastries, sandwiches, and wraps, but apparently that isn't the case with Central Perk.
While the usual cakes have been seen inside here, for some reason at one stage there was a potato, all alone just sitting in a cake stand. It's a very strange moment from the show and perhaps was an inside joke, but it seems very odd that anyone would be ordering that while they have a coffee.
2 Why Don't They Get An Extra Chair?
When the main group is all together, there are six of them, and the issue with that is the place they choose to hang out in Central Perk only seats five. They have the classic sofa, which fits three comfortably, and then two single-person armchairs.
Someone always ends up either standing, leaning, or sitting on the arms of the chairs (which surely you shouldn't be doing in a public environment.) So why do they not just get another chair? They're there all the time, surely they could just get a chair for that area at some point.
1 How Do They Always Get The Same Spot?
This is perhaps the biggest mystery of all when it comes to Central Perk, which is how the group always get the exact same spot, regardless of the time of day. While there is sometimes a reserved sign on the table, that's not always the case, and even if it is, how can they have it reserved the entire day?
There never seems to be a set meeting time for them all to head here, so how would someone know when to reserve it for? Surely the shop can't just leave such a big section empty all day on the hope that the group will turn up, it makes no sense.
