Game Of Thrones: 5 Worst Things Varys Did To Tyrion (& 5 Tyrion Did To Him)

Finding and keeping a good friend in the world of Game of Thrones seems like a gargantuan and difficult task. People scheme and betray others on a daily basis, and actually good persons drop like flies. However, Tyrion and Varys managed to maintain a solid friendship throughout most of the series.

Well, for the most part. As with most of the flawed characters on the show, they did occasionally display some despicable behavior toward each other. Read on if you want to know about the worst things that the Spider and the Imp did to each other over the course of Game of Thrones.

10 Varys: Threatened Tyrion With Knowledge Of Shae

The game of thrones is played with subtlety and cunning, and Tyrion knew exactly how Varys was playing when he first arrived in King's Landing. Varys paid a visit to Shae, who was living in Tyrion's apartment's in secret. By calling on her, Varys was sending a message to Tyrion. He was basically stating to Tyrion that he knew Tyrion's secrets and how to use them against him. Before Varys left the chamber, however, Tyrion made abundantly clear that he knew what Varys was implying.

9 Tyrion: Lied To Varys About Myrcella's Nuptials

Early on in their relationship, Varys and Tyrion were more like coworkers than friends. As such, Tyrion had no scruples about using Varys for his own devices. When trying to suss out who was Cersei's mole on the small council, Tyrion told Littlefinger, Grand Maester Pycelle, and Varys that he was planning to betroth Myrcella. However, he told each councilor she was going to marry a different person. He ended up lying to Varys about who she would marry. Varys did not seem to mind being a tool at the time, though.

8 Varys: Didn't Stand Up For Tyrion After The Battle Of Blackwater Bay

Tyrion basically saved King's Landing during the Battle of Blackwater Bay. Unfortunately, his efforts went largely unnoticed and disregarded by commoners and nobility alike. The only person who recognized what Tyrion did was Varys; he told Tyrion as much when Tyrion was stuck in bed wounded.

However, even though Varys carried this knowledge, he never attempted to promote Tyrion's war efforts to anybody else, leaving Tyrion's heroics in the shadows.

7 Tyrion: Consistently Made Jokes About Varys' Condition

Varys was well-known in King's Landing for being a eunuch. Jokes at his expense were made loudly and often as a result. Tyrion was no exception. Even late into their friendship, Tyrion never hesitated to throw a few scathing witticisms regarding Varys' lack of "parts" straight into the Spider's face. Since Varys had undoubtedly heard jokes of this nature a million times before, he never acted hurt about it, but it's not exactly friendly behavior. (Though perhaps it's actually a sure sign of true friendship.)

6 Varys: Spoke Against Tyrion At His Trial

Tyrion's trial for the murder of King Joffrey was one of the most trying moments on the show. Viewers had to watch as a ludicrous case was unfairly made against him. And when Varys spoke against Tyrion, we all felt like wincing in sympathy with Tyrion afterwards. Granted, we knew ahead of time that Varys would testify against Tyrion in order to protect himself (he admitted as much) even though he remained Tyrion's friend, but it still stung.

5 Tyrion: Forced Varys Into Exile

We understood why Tyrion killed Tywin Lannister, his father. The years of abuse culminating in an unfair trial that would see Tyrion dead is clear motivation for Tyrion's actions. However, by shooting Tywin while he sat on the privy, Tyrion ensured that Varys had to flee King's Landing. Varys had helped to orchestrate Tyrion's escape, and with Tywin dead, Varys had no ways of claiming innocence and returning to King's Landing with Cersei in power there.

4 Varys: Kept Tyrion In A Box Across The Sea

Varys had to smuggle Tyrion away from Westeros after helping him escape from King's Landing. But keeping Tyrion in a wooden box was definitely overkill. Tyrion is small in stature, but remaining cramped in a little cube for days in his own filth sounds like absolute torture.

Surely Varys could have come up with a better means of hiding Tyrion than that? It's a wonder Tyrion didn't emerge from his box loathing Varys.

3 Tyrion: Drank His Way Through Essos

The events that caused Tyrion to flee from Westeros were undoubtedly harrowing. He was accused of poisoning his nephew, placed in prison, went through the most unfair trial in the history of trials, caught his lover sleeping with his father, and then murdered them both. But after all the trouble that Varys went to save Tyrion, did Tyrion really have to spend weeks drinking his problems away in his company? Tyrion is known for, well, knowing things and drinking, but he could have sobered up for a few days just to give Varys some non-inebriated conversation.

2 Varys: Spread News Of Jon's Heritage After Tyrion Told Him

Tyrion came to Varys with the information that Jon Snow was the true heir to the Iron Throne. This was knowledge that not many in Westeros had, and Tyrion entrusted it to his friend. And what did Varys do? He sent out missives to the nobles of Westeros letting them in on the secret and plotted to have Daenerys killed and replaced. Though Varys did what he did for the good of the realm, he placed Tyrion in an incredibly difficult position.

1 Tyrion: Betrayed Varys' Trust To Daenerys

The worst thing that Tyrion did to Varys resulted in Varys' death. Upon learning that Varys was plotting against their queen, Daenerys, Tyrion betrayed him and told her everything. Daenerys, already pushed to the breaking point by losing two of her dragons and her closest friend, decided to put Varys to death for treason. On a quiet night by the beach, she has her last remaining dragon, Drogon, burn the Spider to a crisp. It's clear later on in the show that Tyrion regrets this decision perhaps more than any other he has ever made.
