Harry Potter: 10 Best Characters Who Weren't In The First Book

The Harry Potter universe is home to a vast array of iconic characters. Fans first meet Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger in the first book of the series, along with other characters such as Albus Dumbledore, Rubeus Hagrid, and the sinister Lord Voldemort.

Many fan-favorite characters have been with us from the beginning, but several were not introduced until later in the series. Some were mentioned briefly before establishing a larger role in the narrative, though have impacted the storyline and stolen the hearts of fans. Here are ten Harry Potter characters who were late to the story...

10 Dobby

Dobby the house-elf was introduced in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Dobby, who is bound in service to the Malfoy family, tries to prevent Harry from returning to Hogwarts after discovering Lucius' plan to reopen the chamber and unleash the basilisk.

Dobby inadvertently injures Harry more times than he helps him, but the house-elf becomes a loyal friend to Harry and gives his life to save him in Deathly Hallows. Although he is missing from the first book, he remains one of the most important characters in the series.

9 Luna Lovegood

Luna Lovegood first appears in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Harry meets her whilst onboard the Hogwarts Express, reminiscent of his first meeting with Ron. Luna initially seems like a strange character but becomes one of Harry's closest friends throughout the series.

Luna is an integral member of Dumbledore's Army. She accompanies Harry to the Department of Mysteries and defends Hogwarts twice from Death Eaters during the Second Wizarding War.

8 Bellatrix Lestrange

Bellatrix Lestrange is a powerful witch, menacing enemy and Voldemort's "best, last lieutenant." Her character briefly appears in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire whilst Harry is observing Dumbledore's memories in the Pensieve. She appears again in Order of the Phoenix after escaping Azkaban and kills her cousin, Sirius Black.

Bellatrix is one of the most loathsome villains in the series, yet she is omitted from the first three books. She eventually meets her demise at the hands of Molly Weasley after the evil witch nearly hits Ginny with a Killing Curse.

7 Nymphadora Tonks

Several new characters are introduced in the fifth book.  Tonks is one of the newer members of the Order of the Phoenix and joins Dumbledore's cause after the return of Voldemort. She is a minor but vibrant character in the series who stands out in every small scene.

Tonks is an Auror and the protege of Mad-Eye Moody, as well as an accomplished Metamorphmagus who can change her appearance at will. She marries Remus Lupin and has a son named Teddy with him, but sadly perishes during the Battle of Hogwarts.

6 Sirius Black

Sirius Black is introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and initially appears as a villain. The Animagus is Harry's godfather and was best friends with Harry's father, James. Sirius was blamed for the crimes of Peter Pettigrew and proves this to his godson at the end of the book.

Sirius is an important father figure for Harry who comes into his life when he desperately needs family. His death in Order of the Phoenix is a heartbreaking moment for the Boy Who Lived and one of the most tragic losses in the series.

5 Remus Lupin

Remus Lupin is also introduced in Prisoner of Azkaban. He becomes the new Defence Against The Dark Arts teacher but is forced to resign after Snape reveals to the students that he is a werewolf. Harry discovers that Lupin was also best friends with James, Sirius, and Petter, and one of the creators of the Marauder's Map.

Lupin is a vital member of the Order and fights against Voldemort until his death. Tonks and Lupin make Harry the godfather to their son and the Chosen One raises Teddy after their deaths.

4 Mad-Eye Moody

We don't technically meet Mad-Eye Moody until the fifth book as the Moody in Goblet of Fire is revealed to be Barty Crouch in disguise. The escaped Death Eater uses Polyjuice Potion to assume the identity of the ex-Auror. He displays many of his trademark characteristics, including his ominous warning for "constant vigilance."

Moody joins the Order of the Phoenix and was one of the most powerful and capable members until his death. He is killed at the beginning of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows whilst escorting Harry from Privet Drive.

3 Cho Chang

Cho Chang is Harry's first love interest. He notices her for the first time during a Quidditch match where she plays against him as the Seeker for Ravenclaw. Cho is romantically involved with Cedric Diggory in Goblet of Fire but has a brief relationship with Harry in Order of the Phoenix that ends in disaster.

Harry liked Cho a lot but ultimately neither could help each other recover from Cedric's death. Cho remains a member of Dumbledore's Army and fights for the Light during the Battle of Hogwarts.

2 Bill Weasley

The eldest Weasley child is mentioned in the first book but doesn't physically appear until Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Bill accompanies his family to the Quidditch World Cup and begins to feature more heavily in the series. He is attacked by Fenrir Greyback in Half-Blood Prince and marries Fleur Delacour in Deathly Hallows.

Bill has an impressive legacy as a former Head Boy and curse-breaker for Gringotts that Ron initially feels indebted to live up to. He becomes an integral member of the Order along with his wife and the rest of his family.

1 Arthur Weasley

Ron's father Arthur Weasley first appears in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The Weasley patriarch is a loving and supportive father figure with a fascination for Muggles. He joins the Order after Voldemort's return and fights against the Death Eaters even after being attacked by Nagini.

Arthur and Molly are important parental figures to Harry throughout the series as well as vital members of the Order of the Phoenix. Their family fought against Voldemort and the Death Eaters, despite suffering heavy blows during the war.
