Mad Men's 10 Most Hated Storylines | ScreenRant

Mad Men was an incredibly popular show amongst both fans and critics, and one of the reasons for that was because of how consistent it was. The show always changed things up and while it had lengthy and well-developed plots, it also gave time to shorter ones for the supporting characters. This is why the ensemble cast felt so strong because each character was given a moment throughout the show, something to work with. For the most part, those storylines really did connect and make sense, but every now and then a few pointless moments slipped through the cracks.

Because the show was so detailed, anything that didn't quite connect felt instantly like a weak storyline, but thankfully there weren't too many of those moments. However, in this list, we will be focusing on the 10 worst storylines throughout Mad Men.

10 Manolo & Pete's Mother

We will kickstart the list with a very strange storyline from Mad Men, which involved Pete Campbell finding someone to look after his mother on a regular basis. The person happened to be Manolo, who was advised to him by Bob Benson.

While this storyline originally served to increase the tension between the two men, things took a very odd turn. When Manolo took Pete's mother on a cruise, she ends up dying by falling off the ship? This just came absolutely out of nowhere and made very little sense since it never really led to much of a pay-off.

9 Bob & Joan

While Bob Benson certainly have plenty to do with Pete and Manolo's situation, this was something fans learned to expect, as he was involved in a lot of different situations. One area he got himself involved in was Joan Holloway's life with her young son.

At first, it seemed like a romantic storyline was beginning, but that idea was shot down when it was revealed Bob was homosexual. While you could say it was an example of him trying to win over people, it wasn't really needed as Bob had done that, rendering all this as pointless.

8 One Quick Engagement

Don Draper has a lot of women in his life throughout Mad Men, but only two take a prominent role and one of those is Megan. Their relationship got a lengthy focus throughout the show and it was an amazing storyline that really brought a great story for both characters.

However, the aspect that people hated from the relationship was just how quickly things got together. Don wasted no time in proposing to Megan in a moment that just came out of nowhere. It would have been served better if it had waited just a little longer to actually develop things between them.

7 Don & Diana

As we mentioned, Don Draper does interact with a lot of different women, as is a result of his womanizer tendencies. While some flings are better than others, the absolute worst is undoubtedly his time with Diana, who he seems to enjoy simply because of how mysterious she is.

Diana is the person who pops up at several different stages in Don's life and the two of them just seem to have instant chemistry. However, her character is never really developed at any point, and because of that fans just didn't enjoy the storyline.

6 Pete & The Au Pair

This was a storyline that a lot of fans really didn't like, as many felt like it walked the line of a rape scene a little too closely. There is one of these disgusting encounters in the show between Joan and Greg, but that is done to serve a long-term storyline.

Although that scene is also uncomfortable, it suited the character of Greg and proved how much of a scumbag he was. However, Pete's scene, while it didn't go that far, did allude to that as he took advantage of his neighbors Au Pair after he fixes a dress for her. The show wasn't trying to paint him out in the way, rather that he was just obsessed with cheating on his wife, but it went about things the wrong way here.

5 Ken & Chevy

When the agency first landed Chevrolet, everyone was incredibly excited about the opportunity to work with the car company, and in the end, Ken Cosgrove got the opportunity to do that. However, he ended up having a rough time, suffering a car accident and being shot in the eye.

While it established that the executives at Chevy weren't the nicest to work with, it didn't do anything positive for Ken's character outside giving him a cool eyepatch. Others went to Chevy and didn't receive the same treatment, so it didn't really seem to make much sense.

4 Peggy & Ted

This is a storyline that is quite controversial as some fans loved it and others hated it. There were some positives to this storyline, as it really did bring the best out of the tension between Ted and Don Draper, but that isn't really a big point for why they should have a fling.

Mad Men seemed to tiptoe around this one, teasing the idea and then when they finally went for it the plug was just pulled immediately. The idea might have been a good one on paper, but this storyline just didn't really connect or advance things for Peggy, who was too important of a character to waste at this stage.

3 Hare Krishna

Quite often throughout Mad Men, certain characters would return after having long stretches of time not on the show. One example of that is when Paul Kinsey randomly returned in the season five episode, "Christmas Waltz." However, he was a very different person to the man we had known previously.

Returning to the show as a hippie with a shaved head and a cult that sung the song "Hare Krishna." He came back for one episode, attempting to sell Harry Crane a script, and then he was gone again. It made little sense, and while some found it funny, other people just didn't enjoy it at all.

2 Glen Bishop

One of the most universally disliked storylines that kept popping up at random stages throughout the entire series was Glen Bishops. His character was a very odd one who was very infatuated with Betty Draper, despite the major age gap between them.

He was regularly found with Sally Draper, and most people thought a relationship was going to blossom. Instead, they treated each other as siblings and Glen just awkwardly appeared and sort of stood up for her at times, but it was easily a plot that the show wouldn't have missed.

1 Betty's Weight Gain

This storyline just came and then went without much explanation at all. It was built up quite quickly that Betty Draper was gaining a lot of weight, which was a decision the show took because January Jones was pregnant in real life.

However, because she dropped weight quite quickly post-birth and the show just seemed to give up on the storyline. Everything fizzled out and nothing really came of it, which was a shame as this could have been something a lot greater if it had actually been developed.
