Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Clark Gregg is heading to ABC’s The Connors for a guest-starring role in an upcoming episode. Currently, in season 2, The Conners started as a spinoff of the short-lived Roseanne revival after series lead Roseanne Barr was fired from the show following some controversial comments. With the remaining cast still on board, ABC decided to keep the working class sitcom going under a new title with a renewed focus on the family rather than a singular lead.
Clark Gregg has played series lead Phil Coulson on ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. through the show’s entire run. The show finished up its sixth season last summer and will be airing it’s seventh and final season later on in 2020. Gregg notably got his start as Agent Coulson in the MCU’s first film Iron Man and went on to play a crucial role in the formation of the Avengers. While Loki killed Coulson in 2012’s The Avengers, he was revived on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and brought back as the head of the organization. Gregg most recently made his return to the MCU in Captain Marvel.

According to the ABC, an upcoming episode of The Conners will see Clark Gregg (along with real-world wife Jennifer Grey) play one half of a married couple that takes a liking to Jackie (Laurie Metcalf) and “invites” her into their relationship. The episode will also see Dan (John Goodman), still grieving the loss of his estranged father, trying to form a bond with his younger half-brother Ed Jr., played by guest star Noel Fisher. Those efforts are stalled when Dan finds out their father paid for Ed Jr.’s college after refusing to help Dan.
Meanwhile, Darlene Conner (Sarah Gilbert) will be met with some unexpected reactions when she tells her children she’s going to try to have another baby with her boyfriend, Ben. The younger Conners, Harris (Emma Kenney) and Mark (Ames McNamara), take the news poorly after Darlene informs them of her and Ben’s (Jay R. Ferguson) intentions.
The episode, titled “Bad Dads and Grads,” looks to be packed with plenty of emotional stakes as well as a helping handful of humor. Gregg and Grey’s adventurous couple likely take center stage as comic relief in an episode that also looks to hit some deep emotional notes. It remains unclear if the guest spots will be one-off roles or whether they could reoccur later on. In any case, we’ll be able to see Clark Gregg again when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns later this year, and even sooner when The Conners airs Tuesdays at 8 PM/7 PM on ABC.
