There’s no denying that Cheer is yet another hit docuseries for Netflix. The series follows the Navarro College Bulldogs Cheer Team (from Corsicana, Texas) as they prepare for the National Cheerleading Championship that takes place every year in Daytona Beach, Florida. The docuseries was created by Greg Whiteley, who is also the man responsible for Netflix’s Last Chance U.
The unexpected reaction to Cheer has been the overwhelming love and support for its subjects – from coach Monica Aldama to squad members such as Jerry Harris, Gabi Butler, La’Darius Marshall, Morgan Simianer, and Mackenzie “Sherbs” Sherbum. If you need your fix of more Cheer content and want to know what the docuseries didn’t show, you’ve come to the right place!
10 JERRY GAVE UP ON ATTENDING THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE
At the end of Cheer, we learn that Jerry Harris has gotten a fantastic offer for a scholarship at the University of Louisville. The entire scene leads us to believe that this is a sure-shot for the cheerleader, that he is definitely going to take this offer and attend UofL.
However, the docuseries doesn’t go far enough to show us that, actually, Jerry wasn’t entirely certain about leaving Navarro College. In fact, Jerry has already made it clear that he is back at Navarro College and once again on the cheering team. For what it’s worth, we can be happy about getting more Jerry on the yet-announced Cheer season 2.
9 GABI AND MORGAN ARE OLDER THAN LA’DARIUS, JERRY, AND LEXI
Don’t let those young-looking faces fool you: Gabi and Morgan are actually older than La’Darius, Jerry, and Lexi.
Morgan Simianer is the oldest of the five, already turning 23 years old in October of 2020. In January of 2020, Gabi Butler turned 22. In turn, La’Darius Marshall is only 21 years old, while Jerry Harris and Lexi Brumback are still only 20.
According to the official Navarro College website, nearly two thirds of its student population is under 20 years old. This means that most of the cheerleaders on Cheer are becoming part of the minority on campus.
8 LEXI HAS BEEN IN A LONG-DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP
We learned a lot about Lexi Brumback’s life on Cheer, and the docuseries ended on a sour note for the cheerleader. However, there’s another huge part of Lexi’s life that isn’t explored at all: she has been in a long-distance relationship with Dominic Green, who lives in Houston, Texas, works with live entertainment, and is a proud trans man. On his Instagram, Dominic has been very open about his transition and his relationship with Lexi.
Cheer fans certainly fell in love with Lexi during the course of the docuseries. But after hearing about so many rough situations that she has faced, it would’ve been great to see that she’s in a loving relationship, too. Hopefully, we’ll get to see Lexi and Dominic on season 2!
7 THE SHOW WAS “AN EYE-OPENER” FOR GABI AND HER FAMILY
At The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ellen addressed the fact that Gabi Butler’s parents have faced some criticism from Cheer fans for how hard they were pushing her to work.
Addressing the matter, Gabi replied: “We all watched [the show] together, as a family, and we were like, ‘oh, wow.’ It was a really big eye-opener for all of us.” Then, the cheerleader proceeded to explain that her parents have now decided to let her be more independent and make decisions for herself.
Gabi Butler credits this change of pace as something that has allowed her to be more positive and love herself more.
6 MONICA FORGAVE LEXI AND BROUGHT HER BACK TO THE TEAM
The last episode of Cheer season 1 leads us to believe that Lexi has no chance of coming back to the Navarro College cheer team after getting into trouble with local authorities. However, according to a video released by Netflix, it seems like Lexi and coach Monica quickly made amends and reached a common ground for the cheerleader to come back to the team.
Of course, it certainly helps the docuseries to be picked up for season 2 if it leaves viewers with a cliffhanger. Still, it must feel great for Cheer fans to know that Monica did give Lexi a second chance.
5 LA’DARIUS NEVER LEFT NAVARRO COLLEGE ENTIRELY
The Cheer docuseries also gave us a very “vague” ending for La’Darius Marshall, spending a portion of the final episode on him talking about becoming a personal trainer, a choreographer, or even joining the military. However, just like Jerry and Lexi, it doesn’t seem like the docuseries was showing us everything.
La’Darius did spend some time coaching other teams, but he was promptly back at Navarro College in no time. Assuming that there wouldn’t be a second season, we certainly would’ve benefited from knowing that La’Darius was going to keep being a cheerleader under Monica Aldama.
4 MACKENZIE AND AUSTIN HAVE JOINED A DIFFERENT CHEERLEADING TEAM
It is weird that Cheer spent so much time making us believe that Jerry, Lexi, and La’Darius were going to leave Navarro College, but that storyline wasn’t there for the people who actually left the team.
In other words, the docuseries could’ve spent some time exploring the fact that Mackenzie “Sherbs” Sherburn and Austin Bayles both left Navarro College, and are both now cheering for Texas Tech University. On that note, we also still need to know who dropped Sherbs during practice!
3 DANIEL AND LEXI ARE ACTUAL BFFs
Daniel Fleharty gets a lot of airtime during the first episode of Cheer, but the docuseries chooses to focus on different stories and squad members in later episodes. With that said, a quick scroll through Daniel’s Instagram account brings up a shocking reveal: he and Lexi are actually solid BFFs?
With so much going on in Lexi’s life during the filming of Cheer, it would’ve definitely been great to see that she had a friend in Daniel. Moreover, it’s just plain adorable that these two Navarro College cheer legends call each other “besties.”
2 GABI IS DATING A FOOTBALL PLAYER
Cheer made sure we all knew that Gabi Butler is basically the Beyonce of competitive cheerleading. So, it’s only natural that she would date someone who is also successful within the world of competitive sports, right?
Well, here’s what Cheer didn’t show: Gabi has been dating Jordan Brooks-Wess for a while, who is a college football player for Florida Atlantic University. To be fair, however, Gabi and Jordan are notoriously private about their relationship, which means that they probably didn’t provide too much footage for the docuseries.
1 THE VARSITY SPIRIT ORGANIZATION IS SEEMINGLY NOT OPPOSED TO THE CHEER DOCUMENTARY
A significant chunk of time on Cheer was spent discussing how the Varsity Spirit organization was opposed to having camera crews recording the National Cheerleaders Association Championship in Daytona Beach, FL. After the massive success of this Netflix documentary, certain reports started circulating that Varsity Spirit was changing certain rules to make it even harder for camera crews to make these types of documentaries about cheerleading.
However, Navarro Cheer coach Monica Aldama has declared on a Facebook post that the National Cheerleaders Association Championship rules are the same as the previous year, and that the Varsity Spirit organization “has always been supportive of us and are always there for anything we need.”
