Scrubs: 5 Reasons Turk Was Funnier Than J.D. (& 5 Why It Was J.D.)

Scrubs was undoubtedly one of the most iconic shows of its generation and while it may never have reached the heights that many believe it deserved to, the loyal following that stuck with the series all the way served as proof that there was a purpose behind the chaos that it often entailed.

Two characters at the heart of that chaos were J.D. and Turk, aka the greatest bromance in the history of television. Both men had their moments throughout the show's run and had individual talents in comedic acting, and today, we want to try and pinpoint what those talents were.

10 TURK - Turk’s Scream

We don’t know what it is about Christopher Turk’s scream, but it just works. It’s such a basic form of comedy and, yet, whenever Turk finds himself in a sticky or amusing situation, he always reverts back to the scream.

Its unpredictable nature ensured fans were always kept on their toes, and Zach Braff probably had to hold his tongue and try incredibly hard not to laugh whenever Donald Faison pulled this one out of his locker.

Turk may be a surgeon, but he can still be a bit silly.

9 J.D. - Daydreams

J.D.'s charming nature can be traced to his personality, mainly because it is just so unbelievably pure. Every now and then, he drifts off into the distance, daydreaming whilst those around him sit back and wonder what on Earth he’s actually doing.

Most of the daydreams are home runs and even the ones that don’t appear to be immediately funny tend to produce a chuckle upon reflection. It was such a random and potentially risky idea to go down this route for his character, but it seemed to work.

8 TURK - Childish Instincts

Turk can always be easily influenced to get up to mischief, and that’s one of the reasons why Carla probably wasn’t that sold on him in the early days of their relationship.

Turk's childish tendencies include having fun, pulling pranks, and generally just being a big goofball, and he plays that role really well. The contrast between his childish side and his actual job makes for a really fun back and forth, and he’d be able to nail this side of his persona even without J.D. being in the picture.

7 J.D. - Superbly Camp

“I’ll have an Appletini please, easy on the tini.”

J.D. always had a way with the ladies, many of whom were able to look past some of his more obvious flaws and see the sweetheart beneath.  However, it was pretty obvious that he was one of the more camp members of the main cast – a fact many fans adored.

It was pretty similar to what Ted Mosby from How I Met Your Mother was often able to produce, and a lot of it came from Braff’s facial expressions and ability to turn-a-phrase.

6 TURK - Carla

These two were dynamite together and the fact that they were so consistent, both with their relationship and humor, was what attracted so many people to them.

It was easy to root for Turk and Carla as a couple because they felt so real. They argued, had great chemistry, and always seemed to face their problems head-on.

Turk was never really one to get annoyed with Carla and it was always the other way around. Naturally, this made for some comedic interactions from the first season until the very last.

5 J.D. - The Clumsy Dork

Despite being an incredibly skilled doctor, J.D. always seemed to be a little bit more clumsy than most of his co-workers, both in and out of the hospital.

Physical comedy is an underrated trait and it’s an art that Zach Braff appeared to master during his time on Scrubs. More often than not, J.D.'s clumsy nature was followed up by a few dorky tendencies. This is why he was such a perfect contrast to Turk, who was much more of a jock than anyone else J.D. hung around with.

4 TURK - Competitiveness

“Do you see what you get Carla?! Do you see what you get when you mess with the warrior?!?!”.

Turk was pretty good at basketball and he was also fairly strong. When you link those two things together, the end result is probably going to be a fairly competitive individual.

In this regard, Turk was a complete 180 from his best friend. Even when Turk and J.D. tried to go up against one another, the former often treated their competitions as if he was about to walk out onto the field for the Super Bowl.

3 J.D. - Dr. Cox Relationship

Dr. Cox may have called J.D. “newbie” at every available opportunity, but it always appeared as if he was doing so as a way to unintentionally build a father-son relationship between the two men.

Dr. Cox and Turk had a handful of fun interactions, with many revolving around their competitive natures, but J.D. was always trying to be like Perry and become a doctor as accomplished as he was.

Dr. Cox's insults were often very entertaining, with J.D. mainly taking them on the chin.

2 TURK - Singing

Going on Broadway wouldn’t be the worst of ideas for Donald Faison who, at times, seemed to treat his role in Scrubs as an unofficial audition for a musical.

Turk would break out into song on a regular basis, whether he was in the elevator or singing The Safety Dance as a way to annoy and frustrate Carla.

Plus, no Scrubs fan can forget Turk's participation in The Cool Cats, an airband that brought together a string of random characters from the show. Naturally, Turk was the lead singer.

1 J.D. - Inner Monologue

Without the inner monologue, the world of Scrubs wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense. And that’s especially true for J.D.’s daydreams.

J.D. was able to provide audiences with a story and set up for what was about to happen in every single scene. Most of the time, he was just explaining what was happening; however, every now and then, J.D. would come out with a hidden gem. He was a child at heart but an incredibly self-aware one.

“Sticks and stones may break my bones – but words will hurt forever”.
