The Joker: 5 DC Villains Who Respect Him (& 5 Who Despise Him)

As far as the DC superhero universe is concerned, probably no other villain is as famous and as dangerous as the Joker. Joker has the nickname 'The Clown Prince of Crime,' and you can be sure it's accurate in his case. It's no coincidence that it's Joker of all the rich selection of Gotham villains who is Batman's archnemesis.

Joker has done many horrible things during his long existence (he first appeared in comics in 1940), but that didn't stop thousands of fans from liking the crazy clown. As far as his fellow villains are concerned, some of them respect him while others despise him.

10 Respects: Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn could easily be in both categories, depending on which storyline you take into consideration. However, she did spend most of the time as Joker's partner in crime and a girlfriend, so it's safe to say that Harley is one of the DC villains who (usually) respect the Joker. Harley first appeared in the TV show Batman: The Animated Series and was originally meant as a cameo, but fans loved her so much she came back and the rest, as they say, is history. She and Joker are as thick as thieves in the comics, even though their relationship is far from perfect.

9 Despises: The Riddler

The Riddler and the Joker seemingly have a lot of in common, especially their penchant for gags, but that doesn't mean they get along. Even though they sometimes team up and work together, their most prominent storyline is The War of Jokes and Riddles written by Tom King. In the book, Joker and the Riddler become worst enemies, since they're fighting for the one true privilege - who will kill Batman? And while they fight, Gotham crumbles down around them. Riddler openly despises Joker in this storyline and even though Joker stops Batman from killing Riddler, that doesn't make the two villains friends.

8 Respects: Penguin

Joker and Penguin will never be the best of friends but they managed to get along well in the past and even worked together multiple times. Their goals are very different but when it comes to it, they can still overcome their differences and be evil side by side. That said, Penguin also sometimes looks like he's scared of the Joker, and as you all know, Joker really doesn't respect anyone (maybe except the Batman). Still, the comics brought its readers a few interesting team-ups, like the time when Joker and Penguin competed which of them was a better villain.

7 Despises: Red Hood

Jason Todd aka former Robin aka the Red Hood walks a fine line between being a hero and being a villain. However, when the readers first meet the Red Hood, he's a clear villain, so it's safe to put him on this list. In all of Gotham and further away, there's probably no-one else who hates the Joker as much as the Red Hood does.

And it's perfectly understandable since the Joker killed Jason and when the former Robin got resurrected, he was horrified to find out that Batman had let the Joker get away with his crime. Needless to say, that didn't improve their relationship in the slightest.

6 Respects: Mad Hatter

Joker gets along the best with the Gotham villains who are just as out of touch with reality as he is. And Mad Hatter, while not as known as some other DC bad guys, fits the definition perfectly. If Harley ever found the time to diagnose him, she'd probably point out his many psychological and psychiatric issues. In the comics, Mad Hatter quite often joins the Joker's side, for example in the Arkham Asylum, in which he helps the Joker to lure Batman into the asylum and keep him trapped there forever. Needless to say, their plan doesn't work out exactly the way they had imagined.

5 Despises: Poison Ivy

Dr. Pamela Isley aka Poison Ivy is probably the best example of a true girl-friend among the DC villains you could imagine. Ivy hates Joker by default, because of his awful and abusive behavior towards Harley, and she's the one who repeatedly says to Harley that she should finally kick the Joker to the curb. Ivy is simply a loyal friend to Harley and as such, she shares her grievances and problems. Ivy and Harley later date in the comics and many fans think these two are a much better match than Harley and the Joker since Ivy genuinely cares about Harley and wants her to be happy.

4 Respects: Scarecrow

The whole point of Scarecrow's existence is to find out how people tick, what makes them afraid... and Joker is certainly scary enough to many Gotham citizens. These two have had their differences since Joker simply can't work with any villain without later threatening him or trying to kill him.

Still, when they're not fighting each other, they tend to team up from time to time. And it wasn't always Joker's idea either since Scarecrow came to him at one point in the comics and asked him for a partnership, which he wouldn't have done if he hadn't respected Joker in the first place.

3 Despises: Hush

Unlike some other villains who made it onto this list, Hush so far hasn't appeared in a live-action film. That didn't stop him from becoming one of the most intriguing DC villains. Hush is the walking and breathing example of the fact that two villains simply can't rule the same city... at least not without trying to murder each other in the end. Hush goes as far as to run the Joker out of Gotham and he later asks Batman of all people for help against the Clown Prince of Crime. Then again, Joker also tried to kill him, so Hush's hate towards him was understandable.

2 Respects: Punchline

For many DC fans, Joker is still strongly connected to Harley Quinn and that will never change. Unless a new lady steals his heart. So far it seems that Punchline could be the lady who replaces Harley as Joker's right hand and a partner in crime. Not so much is known about her at this point since she's a brand new character who will debut this year, but if she and Joker start a relationship, it'd make sense that Punchline would like him and respect him, just like Harley used to before she realized what Joker was really like and moved on.

1 Despises: Catwoman

In the comics, Catwoman is the real love of Batman's (and Bruce Wayne's) love so it's no wonder she and the Joker are enemies. Many fans believe that Joker is actually in love with Batman (if he can love anyone in the first place), and if that's indeed the case, then it'd make sense that he dislikes Catwoman just as much she despises him. Unlike some other villains, Catwoman is a very rational person and she never gave in to the craziness. Plus, she's wildly independent and would probably rather die than team up with villains she doesn't trust, Joker included.
