The Mandalorian's International Release On Disney+ Will Be Even Later

It will be even later until Disney+’s European subscribers can view season one of The Mandalorian in its entirety. Disney+ is set to become available to future subscribers in the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, Austria, and India March 24th. Similar to the U.S. launch in November, Star Wars fans will be able to get a taste of The Mandalorian in Disney+’s first week.

Disney+ gained 10 million subscribers in its first day and 28.6 million in only its first three months. This was thanks in large part to the overwhelming success of The Mandalorian and its Baby Yoda. Star Wars’ first live-action television show has been a huge draw for Disney+; one could even argue that a lot of people subscribed to the streaming service just to watch the show. Unlike other streaming services such as Netflix or Amazon Prime, which release entire seasons all at once, Disney+ made episodes of The Mandalorian available weekly (roughly).

Although much of Disney+’s content will be launched in a way that is consistent globally, not all of it will sync up. For example, according to a post on Disney+’s UK, Spanish, and Italian Twitter accounts, European customers won’t get access to all of The Mandalorian available in the states: each episode will roll out weekly starting in March. This is most likely Disney’s attempt to keep subscribers paying for their subscriptions as opposed to less committed routes such as taking advantage of a free trial just to watch The Mandalorian and then canceling. On Disney+’s UK Twitter thread, the conglomerate says “We plan to premiere lots of content at the same time as our friends in the US. However, there will be some variation in content between countries.” Disney will be rolling out more of its content soon, such as its upcoming Star Wars and Marvel shows, as well as its Pixar and Fox titles. The hope is that customers who were brought to the service for one thing will stay for another. In a recent earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger said The Mandalorian (and shows like it) would remain a top priority, with its second season already set to release this October.

Back in December, when The Mandalorian released its last episode of season one, a sizeable portion of Disney+ subscribers threatened to cancel their subscriptions. To prevent a similar move overseas, Disney is attempting to buy themselves some time until The Mandalorian’s second season and the release of other original content like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. As Disney continues to build its inventory with seasons, spin-offs, reboots, and movies, its streaming service should only become more attractive.
