Erin Hannon made her way to Dunder Mifflin Scranton after Pam left her job as a receptionist to become a saleswoman for the Michael Scott Paper Company. Erin's quirky and bubbly demeanor was a nice change in The Office, and she got along quite nicely with the other workers — especially Michael.
Over time, Erin made an impression on a few men at Dunder Mifflin (Gabe, Andy, and Pete) and tried her hand at all of them, but it was clear her deepest connection was with both Andy and Pete.
Erin and Andy formed a close bond before dating but they broke up a few times thanks to outside forces. In Season 9, Erin's feelings for Andy fade and she starts feeling strongly for the new guy, Pete. While it's assumed Erin ended up with Pete, it's hard to know for sure. With that being said, let's take a look at five reasons Erin should have stayed with Andy, and five we're happy she chose Pete.
10 ANDY AND ERIN WERE BOTH DREAMERS
Andy and Erin were both extremely creative. Andy was theatrical and loved to sing, play instruments, and act. And Erin even danced and sang with him. The two would play games and encourage each other to reach their dreams outside of Dunder Mifflin — even if they didn't know what those dreams were yet.
With both Erin and Andy having their heads in the clouds, it created this illustrious relationship that they wanted to try out. But as we know, dreaming can only take a couple so far.
9 PETE HAD MORE COMMON SENSE THAN ANDY
Pete may have been younger than Andy, but it's obvious he's more mature and put together. Andy was the regional manager when Pete was hired, but he was happiest sailing the Caribbean and auditioning to being an actor. Viewers aren't sure of Pete's future career goals but he seemed more level-headed. A great example is in "Roy's Wedding." Clark appears to have a crush on Erin and tries to put the moves on her by inviting her over to shoot an audition tape for a local news station. Andy appears excited about Erin going over to this creepy man's house but Pete sees the bigger picture and intervenes.
8 ANDY PUT HIS JOB IN JEOPARDY TO BRING ERIN BACK TO SCRANTON
When Erin was chosen as one of the select few to travel down to Florida for a special project, she decided she wasn't going to go back to Scranton after her work was done. There was nothing for her in Scranton and she needed a change.
She ended up quitting over Skype and working as an aide for an older woman. It's then that Andy realizes how much he loves Erin and leaves work for days at a time to bring her back. Sure, it was pretty unprofessional of Andy to drop everything, but it was one of the most romantic moments we've seen since Jim and Pam.
7 PETE HELPS ERIN COPE WITH HER FOSTER CARE UPBRINGING
In the episode "Work Bus," the Dunder Mifflin employees spend the day working in a work bus after the office needs some repairs. During this time in the series, Andy and Nellie are in an epic battle of power but Nellie needs Andy's help. She needs him to write a recommendation letter for her to the adoption agency for a higher chance of adopting a child. Sadly, Andy writes a mean-spirited letter, prompting Erin to get emotional. As a child of the foster-care system, Erin was hurting for Nellie and was even more upset at how Andy treated her. But who was there to turn Erin's frown upside down? Pete.
6 ANDY AND ERIN WERE BEST FRIENDS BEFORE DATING
People always say the best kinds of relationships are the ones born out of friendships, and that's exactly what Erin and Andy had. They were each other's best friends before making any romantic moves. Even when Andy moved on to Jessica, and Erin moved on with Gabe, these two had their friendship keep them afloat. Erin would have gladly remained friends with Andy after they broke up in the ninth season but by that time, he was already checked-out of Scranton.
5 PETE'S THERE FOR HER WHEN ANDY ABANDONS HER
The saddest part about Andy sailing to the Caribbean is that it was Erin's idea and he didn't have the common sense to invite her along. Granted, all Erin wanted to do was go for a sunset cruise with Andy but when he decided to set sail for the islands, Erin and her feelings (and their relationship) weren't even a thought for him, which was upsetting.
Erin held the fort down in Scranton as long as she could, but when she wasn't getting anything positive out of her new long-distance relationship her love for Andy faded. Whenever Erin was having a bad "Andy day," Pete was there to lift her spirits and make her realize there was more to life.
4 ANDY MADE SECRETARY'S DAY SPECIAL FOR HER
In the episode "Secretary's Day," Andy wanted to do something really special for Erin since she was the office's secretary. He persuades Michael to take her out to a nice lunch while he decorates the office. Erin really admires Michael and meshed well with his personality, so getting lunch with him was something she was looking forward to (even if he wasn't). The day takes a turn for the worse when she realizes Andy used to be engaged to Angela, but hia effort was what counted.
3 PETE & ERIN WORK WELL AS A TEAM
It appears that Erin and Pete are closer in age than Erin and Andy. This could be why the two work so well together. Their connection doesn't go unnoticed either. Nellie paired Erin and Pete together for a special project and it turned out so good, she wanted to keep them together for other special projects in the future. They're a couple who lift each other up and spin good ideas off of each other's simple notions.
2 ANDY'S 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS GIFT WAS ELABORATE
Every holiday season, Dunder Mifflin Scranton coordinates a Secret Santa where they randomly pick a person to get a gift for. In Season 6, Andy begged Jim and Dwight to have Erin for Secret Santa so he can gift her the 12 days of Christmas. Just like the song, he went into incredible detail to give Erin turtle doves, French hens, and basically a whole lot of birds. Erin ended up getting attacked by the birds and asked the Secret Santa to stop it, but we can't hate Andy for thinking of such a thoughtful gift. It says a lot about him and how he feels about Erin.
1 PETE AND ERIN LIFT EACH OTHER UP
In Andy and Erin's relationship, it seemed like Andy was always in the spotlight. He was always planning something and used Erin as an accomplice of sorts. She never truly had her chance to shine. But with Pete, they're equals. She brings out the good in him and he brings out the good in her. This is especially shown in the episode "The Target" when Kevin accidentally knocks down their card pyramid. While everyone else is mad at Kevin, Pete steps in and lifts his spirits back up, inspiring Erin while he does.
