The Vampire Diaries was as much a love story between the friendships developed and made stronger as it was about the romance. The bonds between Elena Gilbert, Caroline Forbes, and Bonnie Bennett were constantly tested and shifted throughout the series. As the characters grew and changed, their friendships did, too.
But Elena and Caroline always had a tenuous friendship. Especially early in the series, theirs seemed more like a frenemy kind of relationship. The audience could chalk it up to typical, teenage drama, but their friendship always had more than a few barbs with its underlying animosity waiting to surface.
10 They Dated the Same Guys
When Stefan chose Elena, Caroline succumbed to Damon's charms and claimed she got the other brother. Later, Caroline started dating Matt, Elena's ex-boyfriend who was still a little hung up on her. After much drama and trauma, Caroline eventually dated and married Stefan, Elena's latest ex-boyfriend after Elena fell for Damon.
It's all a convoluted web of dating, but the fact remains that Elena and Caroline keep within the same circles of romance. It stands out, especially because Bonnie never strikes up a romance with any of the same guys.
9 Caroline is Insensitive to Elena After Her Parents' Deaths
When Elena returns to school after losing her parents, Caroline seems concerned, asking Bonnie if she's okay. But she does this right in front of Elena, acting like her bereaved friend isn't standing right there.
Later, when Elena tries returning to cheerleading, Caroline is condescending, stating they can put her in the back until she learns the routines. She even casually says Elena has been off since her parents died and just needs to get her mojo back. Caroline's attitude isn't as sweet as she wants to appear.
8 Elena Ignores Caroline's Venting
There are times when Caroline just needs a shoulder to cry on or an ear to listen. She goes to Elena, but more often than not, Elena is distracted and her mind is elsewhere. She tends to ignore her friend's drama, thinking Caroline's problems trivial.
That may be the case sometimes, but that doesn't mean Elena should ignore her friend. It's especially rude as Caroline is always willing to listen to Elena vent about her problems. But Caroline is gracious and excuses Elena's absentmindedness most of the time.
7 Caroline Pushes Elena to Be Like Her
When Elena and Stefan start showing an interest in each other, Caroline pushes Elena to dish about their first night together. Elena responds that they only talked, which leaves Caroline frustrated. Caroline pushes back, telling Elena, "Just jump his bones already! Ok, it's easy. Boy likes girl, girl likes boy, sex!"
There's nothing wrong with Caroline's confidence and how she makes her own choices for her body. But the pressure she puts on Elena to embrace the same lifestyle is not something a good friend does.
6 Elena Makes Everything About Herself
Caroline rightfully called out Elena on her ability to turn everything into a conversation about herself. As Caroline prepared to turn off her humanity to deal with the grief of losing her mom, Elena turned the conversation to the time she turned off her humanity after losing Jeremy.
The moment showed not only how self-centered Elena could be, but also how hypocritical she was. Caroline lamented how all the other vampires got to escape their grief and that she should be allowed the same. Elena should've taken a different approach.
5 Caroline Always Competed With Elena
Caroline set her eyes on Stefan in the beginning, but the younger Salvatore went for Elena. The rejection made Caroline resent Elena, as she always felt like everyone chose Elena over her. Bonnie commented that it wasn't a competition and Caroline responded that yes, it was.
There's even a moment where Caroline tells Elena, "I'm Matt's Elena backup. I'm your Bonnie backup." Caroline's insecurities lead her to feel a great deal of jealousy toward Elena, thinking she's everyone's second choice. That much jealousy and resentment isn't a great foundation for friendship.
4 Elena Threatened Caroline's Mom
With her humanity turned off and running rampant, Elena threatened to kill Sheriff Forbes if Caroline got in her way. To make her point, she did cause some minor damage that the Sheriff could heal from.
Although it could be argued Elena only did these things because her humanity was off, it can't be denied that the pettiness stemmed from somewhere. Flipping off her humanity switch just showed how many negative emotions Elena held at bay and filtered with it on. She had a flippant attitude for hurting someone she called her best friend.
3 Elena Keeps Secrets from Caroline
Elena had a special knack for keeping Caroline on the outside. When she first stepped into the world of the supernatural, Bonnie joined her as the witch discovered her ancestry. This led to the two friends sharing a secret and keeping Caroline out of the conversation.
They did it for her protection, but it can't be denied that it drove a wedge between them. Later, when Stefan killed Enzo, he shared the secret with Elena, who kept it from Caroline. Since Caroline and Stefan had become close friends, that secret hurt.
2 Caroline Tried Breaking Up Elena and Stefan
This situation occurred because Katherine threatened to hurt Caroline and her loved ones if the blonde vampire didn't nudge Elena into breaking up with Stefan. But Caroline's words in her attempt to break up the two rang true as she pointed out how Elena, as a mortal, would grow old and become a burden to Stefan, the immortal who would be forever young.
Elena thought Caroline was projecting her own problems with Matt onto her and Stefan, but really Caroline was doing Katherine's bidding. Still, the bitterness came from truth.
1 Elena Gives Damon So Much Leeway
Considering Damon first used Caroline as his personal toy, compelling her for a physical relationship and to feed on, he got off light in consequences. Elena forgave many of Damon's mistakes when she fell in love with him, but Caroline never forgot his true nature.
She never hid her feelings about their relationship as she remembered how Damon abused her. With their history, it made sense that Caroline only had venom for Damon. As her best friend, Elena should have had Caroline's back after a guy treated her so poorly, not start dating him.
