Walking Dead: Michonne's Exit Should Involve Rick | Screen Rant

However The Walking Dead writes Danai Gurira's Michonne out of the show, she should get resolution on Rick Grimes. Andrew Lincoln's Rick was last seen in The Walking Dead season 9, putting everything on the line to protect his community from an onrushing zombie horde. Unbeknownst to his friends and family, Rick actually survived the incident, and was picked up by the mysterious CRM group along with Jadis. Rick is set to return in an upcoming The Walking Dead movie, with questions still lingering over his status and the reason he never returns to his lover and 2 children.

Among the characters most deeply affected by Rick's assumed death was Michonne. Along with Daryl Dixon, Michonne spent years searching the riverbanks for closure on Rick's fate and was eventually forced to give up and move on. After surviving the time skip and encountering the Whisperers, Danai Gurira has decided to follow her on-screen partner's lead and take her leave from the zombie apocalypse, with a movie career beckoning after the huge success of Black Panther. Michonne is set to leave in the remaining half of The Walking Dead season 10, with a recent trailer highlighting Judith crying and Michonne wielding Negan's baseball bat.

The most vital question is, of course, how Michonne will bow out, since she survives right until the last chapter of the comic books? The Walking Dead is known for its gruesome and shocking deaths, and very few main characters have successfully departed the series infection-free. On the other hand, Michonne is a well-loved character and The Walking Dead's producers might want to leave the door ajar for a potential return. Whether she lives or dies, it's vital that Michonne's exit acknowledges the character's biggest unresolved plot thread: Rick being alive.

In terms of character development, Michonne's journey has reached a natural end point. Successfully raising 2 kids alone and leading her people in the wake of Rick's death, season 10's first half showed Michonne overcoming her mistrust of other communities and rediscovering the benefits of working together. Her personal story, however, is still very much wrapped up in Rick, as is Rick's with Michonne, and one way or the other, Gurira's character must find out the truth of her partner's fate before she exits the show for good.

If Michonne does meet her demise without closure in The Walking Dead season 10, this would be a distinctly unsatisfying ending to one of the best characters on the show, leaving a big plot thread frustratingly unresolved. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways Michonne's exit can incorporate her relationship with Rick Grimes, and while a cameo from Andrew Lincoln would be brilliant, his presence isn't necessarily required to wrap things up.

Michonne could somehow receive word of Rick's survival and embark a treacherous journey to find him, dying in the process. She might even decide to go out looking for him even without a tip off, hoping destiny will reunite them. Both are tragic endings, but they at least conclude the duo's story on Michonne's end. Alternatively, Michonne might be planning to return in the upcoming The Walking Dead movie - something AMC wouldn't announce in advance for fear of spoiling season 10. This way, Michonne's exit could be facilitated by Rick himself, who finally makes contact and brings her and the kids to wherever he currently resides. Whichever option The Walking Dead aims for, watching Michonne die without discovering the truth about Rick would be about as much fun as taking a zombie bite to the neck.
