Bill Murray has to be one of the most likable people on the planet. Not only does his off-screen persona appear to be incredibly down-to-earth and friendly, but he has also given us countless wonderful movies to enjoy over the years.
After breaking out big on Saturday Night Live, Murray became a bonafide movie star with a number of classic comedies. He eventually began to expand outside of pure comedies with a number of acclaimed dramatic performances. Whether you're in the mood to be moved or need a good laugh, he has a stunning filmography to explore. Here are Bill Murray's best movies, according to IMDb.
10 Tootsie (7.4)
Murray doesn't need to be the lead in a movie to get laughs. In just about any supporting role, Murray is guaranteed to steal the show. Tootsie is a classic comedy that stars Dustin Hoffman as a struggling actor who disguises himself as a woman in order to get a role on a television show. Murray plays Hoffman's best friend.
Despite the broad premise, Tootsie is actually a clever and brilliantly written comedy. Hoffman is sensational in the lead role, delivering big laughs but making it all feel surprisingly authentic.
9 The Royal Tenenbaums (7.6)
As you'll see from this list, Murray has a long-standing and successful professional relationship with Wes Anderson. The Royal Tenenbaums was their second collaboration and follows a family of accomplished yet dysfunctional individuals who come together when their patriarch (Gene Hackman) tells them he's dying.
Murray has a hilarious supporting role as the dour husband of Gwyneth Paltrow's character. The incredible cast does amazing work in this funny, unique and moving portrait of a group of geniuses whose personal lives are in shambles.
8 Rushmore (7.7)
Murray collaborated with Wes Anderson for the first time in the magnificent coming-of-age comedy, Rushmore. Jason Schwartzman plays an ambitious student at a private school who finds himself fighting with his mentor (Murray) over the affections of a charming young teacher.
Murray fits perfectly into Anderson's specific world of humor and quirkiness. He gives one of his best performances as a depressed businessman. Schwartzman is stellar in the lead role and it is another example of how Anderson can so effectively make you laugh and move you at the same time.
7 Lost In Translation (7.7)
Murray scored his first Oscar nomination for his wonderful performance in Sophia Coppola's Lost in Translation. Murray plays a movie star filming a commercial in Japan and suffering from a feeling of isolation. He forms an unlikely bond with a young woman (Scarlet Johansson) who is struggling with the same feelings.
The movie is a lovely comedy about the sweet relationship that forms between these two lost souls. Murray really shows his vulnerable side and Johansson proves to be a star in the making with this breakout performance.
6 Ed Wood (7.8)
Murray joined forces with another unique filmmaker, Tim Burton, to tell the story of an even more unique filmmaker. Ed Wood stars Johnny Depp as the titular and infamous director who has often been called the worst director of all time. Murray plays one of the hapless actors roped into Wood's wild productions.
Despite his lack of talent, Wood's optimism refuses to waver as he sets out to make the best film of the 1950s. It makes for an entertaining, funny and surprisingly inspiring tale of determination. Depp gives one of his best performances as the man with a vision.
5 Fantastic Mr. Fox (7.8)
Murray joined Wes Anderson for the filmmaker's first attempt at stop-motion animation in the delightful film Fantastic Mr. Fox. George Clooney provides the voice of the titular fox who struggles with being a responsible family man and returning to his exciting life as an outlaw. Murray plays Badger, an associate of Mr. Fox.
The unique and charming animation style blends perfectly with Anderson's sensibilities as a filmmaker. His humor and emotional beats as just as effective here and the story is genuinely touching.
4 Moonrise Kingdom (7.8)
Once again, Murray partners with Wes Anderson along with an incredible ensemble of actors. Moonrise Kingdom is set on a remote island community where two young outcast kids have run away together, sending the community into mayhem. Murray and Frances McDormand play the parents of one of the children.
The amazing cast also includes Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, and Tilda Swinton who all give wonderful and funny performances. It is a sweet and entertaining tale that will immediately make you remember who it was like to be a young kid out on adventures.
3 Ghostbusters (7.8)
Murray's biggest hit to date came with this iconic horror-comedy. Ghostbusters stars Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson as a group of paranormal exterminators who help rid New York City of its ghost problem.
The movie is an incredibly fun and endlessly rewatchable popcorn film with big laughs and some genuine frights. Murray is legendary as the film's lead, bringing his perfect dry wit to the outlandish situations which makes them all the more hilarious.
2 Isle Of Dogs (7.9)
Murray and Wes Anderson tried their hand at stop-motion animation again with even more satisfying results. Isle of Dogs is set in a future Japanese society in which the corrupt government exiled all dogs to a trash island. The story follows a pack of wild dogs who help a young boy reunite with his beloved pet.
The animation style is even more impressive this time around and Anderson builds a fascinating world for this story. Along with his usual all-star cast and sharp humor, this is a compelling and heartwarming adventure.
1 Groundhog Day (8.0)
Murray tends to give his best performances when he has the chance to mix humor with drama, such as he does with Groundhog Day. Murray stars as a bitter and cynical weatherman covering the annual groundhog festival. However, he finds himself reliving the same day over and over in a loop.
The brilliant premise has been mimicked many times but never so effectively. It is a clever story that allows Murray to show off his acidic humor as well as showing him go through an amazing arc throughout this character's journey.
