Freddy vs. Jason's Alternate Ending Saw A Different Slasher Villain Win

Freddy vs. Jason's standard conclusion sees Jason emerge the clear victor, but its alternate ending works out much better for Freddy Krueger. At the end of 1993's Jason Goes to Hell, horror fans of the time were shocked to see Freddy's glove rise up from the ground and drag Jason's hockey mask down to Hell. While the moment clearly hinted at a long-rumored crossover movie, it would be another decade before Freddy vs. Jason finally materialized.

The crossover was able to come together after both franchises became the property of New Line Cinema, but the problem was the studio wasn't happy with the many, many script attempts they commissioned over the course of the next 10 years. Finally, writer Damian Shannon and Mark Swift succeeded in providing what New Line was looking for, and Freddy vs. Jason would go on to be a smash hit, making more money than any other entry in either the Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th franchises had made before.

While the final released cut of Freddy vs. Jason ends in a way that definitely favors Jason - Freddy's not gone, but for now, he's just a decapitated head carried by the Crystal Lake killer - the crossover went through several different alternate ending ideas. One of these ideas was filmed, and sees Freddy get the real last laugh.

In Freddy vs. Jason's originally filmed ending, protagonist couple Will (Jason Ritter) and Lori (Monica Keena) finally prepare to have sex for the first time. As they move further along in the love scene though, Will starts to act out of character, and become overly aggressive. When Lori protests, Will begins choking her, then raises up his hand, which turns into Freddy's signature razor glove, and is seemingly going to kill her with it.

While the alternate ending makes Freddy the real winner, test audiences hated it, coming away confused about what exactly it meant. They were also left wondering what happened to Jason, as he didn't appear in this ending. It's easy to see why viewers were left puzzled, as, while Freddy is clearly involved, it's not made clear what exactly is happening. Was Freddy somehow possessing Will? Was Will going to become the new Freddy? Was Will/Freddy going to rape Lori? Or was it all just a nightmare, and not real? Faced with all those understandable questions, the filmmakers opted to invent an entirely new conclusion in which both Jason and Freddy are seen, and it's implied Will and Lori simply lived happily ever after. Those interested can decide for themselves which ending is better though, as the alternate one is included on the DVD and Blu-Ray releases of Freddy vs. Jason.
