Lord of the Rings: 10 Couples That Would Have Made A Lot Of Sense (But Never Got Together)

In The Lord of the Rings, romance often takes a side role to the plot. However, romance is still an element of the story and some characters have a romantic subplot that drives their story arc. The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films focus on the romances even more than the books do.

While some of the couples from the franchise were great together and had a lot of fan support, there were also other potential couples that would have made a lot of sense but that didn’t get together in canon. Here are ten of them.

10 Eowyn and Arwen

This pairing might be a little more out there as far as the plot goes because they never actually met and the fact that Arwen is an elf and Eowyn is a human.

However, if the books hadn’t been written so long ago, a romance between two women instead of a love triangle involving a man would have been a less overdone story. While these two might not get the chance to meet, their personalities would have complemented one another well.

9 Thorin and Bard

Bard is a character that has less of a role in the book than he does in The Hobbit movie trilogy. This is because with three movies lots of characters were given more of a story and screen time.

While Thorin and Bard aren’t exactly always on the same side given as the treasure situation makes things complicated, they do help each other out at times, too. Thorin in the movies was given a much younger and traditionally attractive look, and exploring the dynamic between these two men could have been interesting.

8 Arwen and Legolas

While Arwen and Aragorn are the biggest romantic relationship in the series and a couple that many fans love, this doesn’t mean that they couldn’t have worked well with other people. Arwen and Legolas are both elves, so Arwen wouldn’t have had to face the hard choices of giving up her immortality for a human.

While we only briefly see these two interact in The Fellowship of the Ring, they likely knew each other even before this as Legolas and Aragorn were friends.

7 Gandalf and Saruman

This is another couple that might not come to mind at first when thinking about potential romances in the series, however, it does make sense in a way. These two have known each other for hundreds of years, and they were both sent to Middle-Earth as Istari with a mission to help those who sought to destroy Sauron.

They were close allies because of this, so Saruman's betrayal would have cut very deeply. If these two had some sort of romantic relationship in the past, this would make Saruman’s betrayal even more interesting.

6 Legolas and Aragorn

Because of the fact that most of the characters in Lord of the Rings, especially the main ones, are all men, there is a lot of shipping of two men in the fandom. The Fellowship of the Ring itself is only made up of men, so many people have shipped these members together. Aragorn and Legolas are one of the pairings that makes a lot of sense.

This is because of their clear friendship in the movies, and it’s quite possible they had met before this when Gollum was being held in Mirkwood. Their bond in the movies is strong, and it could easily have been romantic.

5 Elrond and Thranduil

Elrond and Thranduil are another pairing that doesn’t really interact much in the actual text, but there is still a good case to be made for them making sense together.

Both of them are elf lords who lost their wives long ago. They both would have an understanding of the sorrow of being an elf as well as of losing loved ones. While in Tolkien’s world elves don’t often move on after losing their spouses, the movies don’t hold to these rules quite so strictly.

4 Bilbo and Thorin

This is another relationship that wouldn’t have made any sense in a book context, but in the movie context, it works better. This is a fairly popular ship in fandom because of the fact that both of these characters were made to be younger and more attractive in their movie version.

They also have a relationship arc that goes from one of distrust to one of being allies and even friends.

3 Aragorn and Eowyn

Aragorn and Eowyn are a couple that almost happens in the canon. Eowyn sees Aragorn as someone who can help her out of her bad situation, and Aragorn sees that a life with her would be easier and would also keep Arwen from dying.

While Aragorn and Arwen’s love won out, there is a case to be made for Aragorn and Eowyn being good together. Their relationship would have been a lot easier and beneficial to both of them.

2 Frodo and Sam

Frodo and Sam are one of the most obvious couples that could have been from The Lord of the Rings. While Sam does end up with Rosie Cotton, this is a side note that could easily have been changed.

Frodo and Sam have one of the deepest relationships of any from the series. Sam is absolutely essential to helping Frodo, and by the end of their journey, they have a bond with one another that no one else could really understand.

1 Legolas and Gimli

Legolas and Gimli are another obvious contender for a great couple that never happened. These two actually leave Middle-Earth together to sail to Valinor, and this is a huge thing given that Gimli is a dwarf.

Their friendship and bond that they create during their time as Fellowship members is a symbolic healing of the long rift between elves and dwarves. These two clearly remained in each other’s lives, and metaphorically left to spend their afterlives together.
