They may have been forced together in Season 1, but fans enjoyed watching as the trust between the two grew and the pair became each other's confidants. From Merlin's sacrifice to Arthur comforting the sorcerer after Freya's death, here are the 10 best moments that sum up their journey together.

10 Arthur comes back for Merlin

In the episode "The Sword in the Stone," Arthur, Merlin, and the knights are forced to flee to Ealdor after Morgana attacks Camelot. However, Arthur also finds out that his uncle, Agravaine, has betrayed him and is now trying to kill him. As a result, Merlin and Arthur are forced to move from the village and hide in some caves.

Agravaine tracks them down, which causes Merlin to tell the others to go on ahead while he confronts Arthur's uncle. Arthur is hesitant to allow Merlin to risk his life, and eventually goes back to find him. Although he says he's joking, there is some truth to the statement when Arthur tells Merlin he's the only friend he's got left that he couldn't bear to lose.

9 Arthur misses Merlin

In "A Servant of Two Masters," Merlin gets kidnapped by Morgana, which means Arthur is forced to get a new manservant. Although George dresses the same as Merlin, Arthur cannot take to him, finding him boring and dull. As a result, he and the knights go searching for Merlin.

When Arthur finds the sorcerer stumbling in the forest, he rushes to hug him. The king also shows how much he values Merlin when he reveals that Merlin is the only person he can truly trust. Merlin wouldn't be able to remember this afterward, but it does show how much of a confidant he has become for Arthur.

8 Merlin has been poisoned

As it was his duty to keep Arthur alive, Merlin was shown to make many sacrifices for the crown prince. His very first save came in the episode "The Poisoned Chalice" when Nimueh tricked Merlin into drinking from a poisoned goblet.

Merlin rushes into the throne room to warn Arthur that someone was making an attempt on his life. To find out the truth, Uther forces Merlin to drink from the goblet, which causes the manservant to collapse. While Gaius and Gwen are attending to him, the crown prince goes on a quest to find Merlin the antidote. This marked the first step in their friendship.

7 Arthur sacrifices himself for Merlin

In "The Labyrinth of Gedref," Camelot was seen to suffer a famine after Arthur kills a unicorn. Although Merlin forcing Arthur and Morgana to eat his rat stew was one of the funniest moments, the best scene in the episode has to be when Arthur sacrifices himself for Merlin.

The ultimate moment comes when Arthur is put through several tests. One of them sees Merlin and Arthur enter the Labyrinth where the men come across two goblets with one full of poison. After pouring both goblets into the one cup, Arthur ends up collapsing when he drinks from the chalice. Fortunately, the keeper of unicorns reveals Arthur and Camelot would be fine after the prince proved he was pure for trying to protect his friend.

6 Arthur goes to Ealdor

In the episode "The Moment of Truth," Merlin must return home after his village is attacked by raiders, and Uther denies his mother's request that Camelot should help protect the village from future attacks.

Although Camelot's forces are not allowed to get involved, Arthur surprises Merlin by turning up to help. Arthur then manages to rally the other villagers, teaching them how to fight and defend themselves. After the battle is won, Merlin is then convinced to return to Camelot as many point out how Arthur has come to value his friendship and service.

5 Merlin saves Arthur from the Dorocha

In the episode "The Darkest Hour: Part 1," Camelot is under threat after Morgana opened the veil to the Spirit World. As a result, she released a supernatural creature called the Dorocha. These are several monstrous creatures that can kill any mortal by freezing them to death.

At one point, Merlin and Arthur find themselves cornered by the Dorocha, where Arthur confides in Merlin that he is worried about dying. The king's fears almost become a reality when one of the creatures manage to find them. However, Merlin throws himself in front of Arthur and takes the full hit. Arthur can only watch on concerned as Lancelot takes him back to Camelot.

4 Merlin Waits Outside The Room After Uther's Death

Arthur's toughest test arrived in "The Wicked Day" when Uther died. From the opening of Season 4, it was foreshadowed that his time on the show was limited as Arthur was beginning to perform his kingly duties. Uther soon dies after protecting his son from an assassin.

Arthur was devastated by the passing, and did his best to save his father. However, Morgana's intervention made it impossible for anyone to cure him. While Arthur was saying his final goodbye, Merlin chooses to wait outside the throne room all night. He tells the new king that he didn't want him to feel alone, which Arthur was shown to appreciate.

3 "The Bravest Man I've Ever Met"

"The Diamond of The Day: Part 1" sees another touching moment when Arthur and Merlin have a heart-to-heart before the final battle with Morgana. Merlin tells a disappointed Arthur that he wouldn't be able to join him in Camlann because he has to run an errand for Gaius.

In truth, Merlin is going to travel to the Valley of The Fallen Kings to try and restore his magic. However, Arthur sees this as an act of cowardice and tells him that he "always thought [Merlin] was the bravest man [he] ever met." If it was any other servant, he wouldn't have cared, but it was important to Arthur that Merlin stood by his side.

2 Comforting Merlin After Freya's Death

From the moment he said he would run away with her, fans knew Merlin and Freya's relationship wouldn't last. When she turned into the Bastet, Freya had proven herself to be too dangerous. In her supernatural form, she was wanted by the knights of Camelot for killing several residents and the bounty hunter who captured her.

Unfortunately, Freya died after Arthur delivered her a fatal blow. However, the prince was unaware of Merlin's relationship with the Druid at the time, which meant the sorcerer was forced to grieve in secret. Still, Arthur recognized something was troubling his servant and sought him out. There was a touching moment as Arthur attempted to cheer Merlin up.

1 The Revelation Of Merlin's Magic

Arthur accepting Merlin for being a warlock had to take the number one slot. This had been an underlying issue in their friendship: Merlin had been constantly worried about his friend finding out his secret. There was always that fear that Arthur would have him executed for being a sorcerer.

Arthur found out Merlin's secret in "The Diamond of the Day: Part 2." As suspected, the king didn't take the news well and was hostile towards him. However, he soon came around after realizing how much Merlin had saved him. In Arthur's final farewell, he thanks Merlin for everything and tells him to never change. Although Arthur dies, it was a nice moment that gave Merlin and Arthur's friendship closure.
