When Pretty Little Liars premiered in 2010, fans quickly became obsessed with series and its intriguing characters and plotlines. The show had several twists and turns throughout its several years on the air and by the time the series ended in 2017, fans had some questions.

The series did its best to tie up any loose ends in the season seven finale but fans were still left a little frustrated with some of the storylines. From Toby faking his death to Spencer having an evil twin sister, some things just didn't add up. Keep reading to find out the show's 10 most hated storylines.

10 Toby Faking His Death

While this storyline did stir up quite a bit of a drama, it was by no means a fan-favorite part of the series. In season three, Toby joined the A-Team and faked his death in order to protect Spencer. When Spencer found Toby's supposedly dead body, she spiraled and ended up at Radley Sanitarium.

At first glance, this seems like a good move on Toby's part. By faking his death he was protecting Spencer and working towards learning the truth about "A." Unfortunately, his plan backfired. The news of his death wrecked Spencer and Toby left the A-Team virtually empty-handed.

9 Emily Dating Paige

To this day, fans still don't understand why Emily and Paige ever got together. When the pair met in season one, they had a pretty rocky start. Paige bullied Emily relentlessly - and even tried to drown her - but Emily continued to have Paige's back. Paige's feelings for Emily came to light in "The New Normal" and the two eventually began to date.

Many viewers were against this pairing considering how harshly Paige had treated Emily in the past. Regardless, the two dated on and off for several seasons throughout the series.

8 Aria's Parents Accepting Ezra

The fact that Pretty Little Liars normalized a high school student and teacher relationship was pretty problematic. While fans didn't dislike this storyline in general, they did hate how Aria's parents handled the news of their daughter dating her teacher.

Initially, Ella and Byron were horrified, which was the expected reaction. However, as time went on Aria's parents came around eventually accepted this relationship entirely. Many fans just couldn't get on board with this because it essentially glamorized inappropriate student-teacher relationships.

7 Ezra Dating Ali

Speaking of inappropriate storylines, Ezra dating Ali is a big one. Throughout the series, the Liars referred to an anonymous older guy that Ali was seeing as Board Shorts. Well, in season four, Spencer found out that Ezra was Board Shorts. This was the last thing fans wanted to see.

Not only did this mean that Ezra was seeing yet another under-age girl, but it also meant that he had been keeping this secret from Aria for four seasons. It was pretty hard for fans to want to root for Aria and Ezra's relationship after this reveal.

6 Mrs. DiLaurentis Covering Up Ali's Murder

This plotline was a twist, that's for sure, but it was a messy one. After Jessica DiLaurentis witnessed Charlotte hit Alison over the head with a rock, she covered for Charlotte by burying Alison. This makes little to no sense, considering Alison was Jessica's beloved daughter.

Jessica was clearly in a panicked state, but if she would have calmed down just long enough to take Ali's pulse, she would have known her daughter was alive. It's safe to say that the long-awaited reveal of who buried Alison alive was underwhelming and puzzling at best.

5 Alison and Elliot's Relationship

As if Pretty Little Liars wasn't dark enough, the series managed to take it a step further in season six when fans saw the relationship between Ali and Elliot blossom. Things started off smoothly for the pair and it seemed like Elliot was a good match for Alison. However, any Pretty Little Liars fan knows better.

Things quickly went from bad to worse as it was revealed that Elliot was actually evil and just wanted to make Alison look crazy. This storyline probably wouldn't be so hated if it weren't for the horrific torture that Elliot put Alison through such as drugging her and forcing her to wear a muzzle.

4 Spencer and Caleb Getting Together

There's no denying that Spencer and Caleb make an adorable couple but fans just couldn't get behind this pairing. In season six, it's revealed that Spencer and Caleb got together during the time jump. They were cute together and definitely had chemistry but most fans were Team Hanna and Caleb thanks to their history.

Spencer and Caleb eventually parted ways since Caleb still had strong feelings for Hanna. This was all for the best but fans would have preferred it if the two simply never got together in the first place.

3 Ezra Going To South America

Season six was a pretty frustrating season for Pretty Little Liars fans as it seemed incredibly rushed. During the time jump, Ezra got engaged to Nicole, a Habitat for Humanity supervisor that once crossed paths with Emily earlier in the series. During one of her volunteer trips to South America, Nicole was kidnapped and thought to be dead.

During this time Ezra and Aria were finally rekindling their relationship but when Ezra found out that Nicole was possibly alive he rushed to South America. This was an all-around messy storyline that seemed quickly thrown together by the writers of the series.

2 Toby Being With Yvonne

Yvonne was a great character but she never got a fair shot. Viewers immediately didn't like Yvonne simply due to the fact that she was in the way of Spencer and Toby being together. Fans of the series are pretty protective of Spencer and Toby's relationship so the news that Toby was engaged to someone else wasn't received well by the fandom.

Don't worry, their relationship didn't last long. The teen drama took a page out of the Grey's Anatomy playbook and killed off Yvonne just as she and Toby were tying the knot.

1 Spencer's Twin Twist

This is easily the most hated Pretty Little Liars storyline of all time. Fans were pretty underwhelmed by the A-Team reveal in the series finale. The last episode of the series explains to viewers that Spencer's twin sister, Alex Drake, was the final "A".

In a not-so-original plot twist, it was revealed that Alex wanted to take over Spencer's life and mess with the Liars in order to avenge her sister, Charlotte. The entire Pretty Little Liars family tree was pretty confusing at this point and this twist felt half-baked.
