Super Smash Bros. Ultimate May Be Masahiro Sakurai's Last Game

Masahiro Sakurai has said that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch could be the last game he ever makes. There are at least two more years worth of content in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as the second Fighters Pass is adding six more characters (all expected to be released sporadically until the end of 2021).

Sakurai was originally known as the creator of the Kirby series, but that accomplishment has been dwarfed by that of his other creation - Super Smash Bros. It's considered a huge event for a new character to be added to a Super Smash Bros. game, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate boasts an impressive roster, making it the biggest video game crossover of all time.

It seems that Sakurai could be reaching the end of his esteemed career. In his latest Famitsu column (via Eventhubs), Sakurai says he has no plans for games after the current crop of DLC characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. He also notes this could be the last time he works on any game.

Sakurai is 49 years old, but he is known for working so hard on games that he's injured himself. Sakurai discussed passing out at the gym, as well as going into work while hooked up to an IV drip. This early retirement may mean he's considering his health, as he's not getting any younger. If Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is his final game, then Sakurai has a lot to be proud of, as it's one of the best-selling games on the SwitchSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate is currently the second best-selling game on the system, behind Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

As the creator of Kirby, Sakurai might be tempted to end his career with a new title in the series that made him famous, which would be a fitting send-off. If Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was Sakurai's last game, then being the creator of the biggest video game crossover of all time is one hell of a final achievement. Sakurai created a game that crossed party lines, with Nintendo characters fighting alongside representatives from Microsoft games and PlayStation-exclusive titles. It's considered a major honor for a character to make their way into a Super Smash Bros. game, which shows just how beloved the series has become

Hopefully, this won't actually be Sakurai's last game. Maybe he could create a Fire Emblem game after he's done with Super Smash Bros. UltimateThe fans won't have to complain about the abundance of Fire Emblem characters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate if Sakurai can finally sate his insatiable hunger for anime sword boys in a Fire Emblem title of his own.
